Volunteer: Railroad Crews Needed!

The Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum is seeking new volunteers!

Everything at the WW&F happens through the efforts of our team of volunteers. You may not realize it, but the WW&F is staffed entirely by volunteers. Volunteering on the railway is one of the greatest contributions you can make towards the success of the WW&F, and is essential to keeping the Railway running safely and growing.  Over the years, we've been fortunate to attract a skilled, diverse, and enthusiastic volunteer workforce.

As the WW&F has grown, we've identified areas of critical volunteer need and have created a program that enables new volunteers to get involved easily. We are highlighting volunteer positions which we seek to fill and hope that you'll join us.

Currently, WW&F Master Carpenter Eric Schade is seeking volunteers to expand our woodworking crew. The needs are described below:
"The Carpentry department is responsible for maintaining the wooden car fleet of the WW&F. We build new cars, rebuild the old stuff and maintain the operating fleet. We work on the wooden car bodies, and the associated metal work including hand rails, steps, roofs. If you are skilled or interested in work that will help us out let us know.

We need:

Rough carpenters Folks skilled in trim and cabinetry Painters Blacksmiths Tin roof workers Anyone who wants to develop their carpentry skills

We work together and share skills, so if you do not feel accomplished but want to learn, we are your people."

Additionally, we are seeking volunteers in... The track department track laborers to maintain and extend the existing railway. The shop for: skilled machinists for locomotive construction, maintenance and associated work; general laborers for other shop projects. The operating department agents car hosts. The building department framing carpenters other building trades.

If you'd like to volunteer with us please either email us at info@wwfry.org (put 'volunteering' in the subject line) or call us at (207) 882-4193 extension 1. Your information will then be passed along to the manager of the department you are interested in. They will contact you to set up a time to get you acquainted with other members and begin volunteering.

Volunteer: Help Rebuild and Operate a Historic Railroad

Volunteers are a critical part of the WW&F Railway's mission to rebuild Maine history. It is the volunteers that work on our projects, that meet and greet our visitors, and that operate our trains. We have no paid staff.

We encourage new volunteers to come and find a place with us. Because of the variety of things we do, and the potential dangers of working around railroad equipment, we require that new volunteers only do work at the railroad when there are longer-term volunteers around, at least for the first couple of months, so that we can “show you the ropes”.

To volunteer, just show up. All ages, abilities, and interests are welcome. There is something for everyone - and we do our best to match volunteer capabilities and interests with our needs. Of particular note, we always can use additional laborers, skilled metal and wood workers, equipment operators, painters, carpenters and general workers. We also need help to staff our gift shop, prepare meals for the volunteers, clean the campus, act as docents and guides, and manage the day to day operations of one of Mid Coast Maine's premier historic sites.

For those volunteers interested in train crew service, we have an initial waiting period as well as a training program. We ask that new volunteers accumulate at least 150 hours over no less than 6 months, before formal train crew service begins. This helps everyone to get to know everyone else better, and gives time for the new volunteer to decide if the museum is a right fit for them.

Volunteers are always present on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Typically, work begins by 8 am on Saturdays (9am on weekdays) while “closing time” is after 4 PM. (During the late autumn and early winter months, when it gets dark early, we leave early.) Activities are usually rain or shine, but may move indoors during inclement weather.

Our volunteer corps is like a family. Many meet for breakfast before the day begins or for supper after it ends. Others keep in touch with each other throughout the week.

Volunteer: 2024 Food Rescue Efforts at Local Farms and Community Gardens

Join us to help increase access of fresh food at our local food pantries through our Downeast Gleaning Initiative.

Throughout the spring, summer and fall (May through October), we have regular and single day events to collect food that might otherwise go to waste. We harvest at local farms and community gardens, and deliver the food to pantries and communities in need, so that more residents can enjoy healthy fresh food. We welcome school and other groups.

Beginning in May we are looking for people to join us at area farms or community gardens.

On Monday mornings we are looking for able bodies to share in the fun at Washington Academy's East Machias food bank garden (4 Cutler Rd, East Machias, ME 04630).

On Tuesday mornings we are looking for able bodies to join us at our new Community Food Bank Garden (Downeast Restorative Harvest Project), on Broadway next to the Versant Power station, just a couple minutes up the road from Court Street in Machias.

Visit local farms and community gardens, connect with others, learn how you can grow and harvest vegetables, all while you are helping your neighbors in need!

You can join us for an hour or for the duration of the work day. We are most flexible. You can come weekly or just come a couple of times. Contact Lucy at 207 479 6940 or by email at lucy.zwigard@healthyacadia.org for more information and to get involved.

Volunteer: Pet Food Bank Set up, organization, distribution, logistics, marketing, fundraising

GaDaH has a great opportunity to access truck loads of high quality dog and cat food at heavily discounted costs.

We are looking to set up a Pet Food Bank for communities that would benefit from this potential resource.

In order to make this work we will need help in the following areas:

Logistics - the food we get has to be accounted for and monthly reports submitted back to the donor.

Admin - creating forms / data base system for people to apply for food - checking they meet the requirements

Fundraising - People who are comfortable asking people / companies / non-profits / seeing grants - for help to cover the cost of the food.

Marketing - to raise awareness of our program

Volunteer Management- reaching out and organizing volunteers

There is no limit as to where we can offer our service, so once set up and having a committed volunteer base, we can go to anywhere there is a need.

We have a shuttle bus that can be loaded up to go to set up locations and we can have specific hours at the rescue to distribute food.

Organization: Give a Dog a Home Rescue

Volunteer: APO - Senior Buddy Program

The Senior Buddy Program focuses on reducing loneliness that is often found in seniors who do not have enough social interactions. The goal is to match UMF students (and community members) with a local resident at one of Farmington's assisted living facilities. The idea is for the student to visit weekly with their 'Buddy' at their convenience. The role of the students would be to provide more social interactions, by listening to their stories, having lunch together, talking, playing board games or cribbage, listening to music, etc. This program wants to ensure reliability, as research shows loneliness can actually increase if the social interactions suddenly stopped. The hope is to also get more students interested in the aging population!

Volunteer: Become a Big Brother or Big Sister! Start something today!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine is committed to providing strong and enduring, professionally supported 1 to 1 mentoring relationships that change children's lives for the better, forever.

Being a Big Brother or a Big Sister does not require any special skills. A volunteer is expected to become a friend and mentor to a child and is not expected to be a skilled counselor or social worker. Our volunteers are expected to make a minimum commitment of one year to the program.

During that year, Bigs in our Community-Based program need to share 3 to 5 hours of their time (at least every other week) with their assigned Little Brothers or Little Sisters. Bigs in our Site-Based program commit to meeting a child during school or an after-school program for one hour a week for the duration of at least one school year.

In the Community-Based program, children are between the ages of 7-14 when they come into our program and are primarily from single parent homes and have no significant behavior issues. Community-Based Bigs typically pick up a Little at his or her house and have outings in the community doing activities that both people enjoy doing.

In our Site-Based program, children are between first grade and middle school when matched, able to commit to a year of participation, and lack significant behavioral or emotional problems. Site-Based Bigs typically meet Littles during lunch or for a regular hour each week during an after-school program. The qualities we are looking for in our volunteers are maturity, stability, patience, consistency and reliability. Care is taken to match volunteers and children who share interests and seem compatible.

Volunteer: Participate in Our Fundraisers

Want to support children in need and have a great time? Join with fellow community members, the Board of Directors, and staff of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bath/Brunswick for one of our three major annual fundraisers! All proceeds from our fundraisers directly support Community, School, and Site-Based mentoring programs. "Bowl For Kids Sake" is our largest annual event, which takes place in the spring each year. Participants join with co-workers, family, and friends in a team of four bowlers to raise pledges in support of mentoring programs for children living in your community. This is a unique team building opportunity for an organization or company, and a great way to spend time with friends and family. "The Big Swing" Charity Golf Tournament takes place each fall. Teams of four golfers enjoy 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch, awards, giveaways and a silent and live auction. We offer Mulligans and Strings to purchase, raffle items to win, Straightest Drive and Putting Contest. The agency's final annual fundraiser is a "Big Awards Party" in December, honoring businesses and individuals who support our community's youth through Big Brothers Big Sisters programs.

Volunteer: Comfort Shawl Knitters & Crocheters

Do you love to knit or crochet?

Our Peaceful Passages program provides special packages to Hospice patients that are designed to offer comfort to patients and their families at the end of life. Each special package includes an angel token, a worry stone with a special message, a candle, and a booklet of poems and prayers with a space for patients to write their thoughts, memories and feelings and a handmade comfort shawl. Each shawl is labeled “This comfort shawl was handmade for you with prayers and thoughts of love.” We have patterns available, though we also invite volunteers to use their own patterns as long as they fit within the general framework of dimensions that we will provide. Our goal is for the shawls to wrap comfortably without a patient having to hold on to them. We very much appreciate the variety of colors, patterns and textures that we receive in our donated shawls.

How would I know if I’m a good fit for this?

If you enjoy handcrafting things, know how to knit or crochet and would like to help someone feel cozy, comforted and thought of at the end of their life, then this is the perfect job for you.

Training Requirement:  No required training.

Ongoing Commitment: No ongoing commitment. We would appreciate as many or as few shawls as you wish to make!

Dates/Times Available: Knit or crochet wherever and whenever you’re comfortable, on your own or in a group.

Next Steps:  Respond here and we will follow up by phone. We will also provide the basic parameters and process needed for our shawls. If you would like a knitting or crochet pattern, we have those available as well. We also invite you to visit our website at www.ahch.org for more information on our organization.

Volunteer: Local Host Families Needed for International Students

This is the time of year when Penobscot School shifts its focus from weekly foreign language classes to the annual summer English immersion program for adults and host family recruitment is at the top of the to-do list. The school is looking for local families - Rockland, Rockport, Camden, Thomaston areas - who are interested in hosting an adult student from abroad for three weeks in July and/or August. The only requirements are a willingness to share your home and lives with a visitor from afar, and a clean and comfortable spare room. Our students take your generosity to heart and many friendships have been bonded throughout the years. As Penobscot School celebrates its 23rd year of operation as a non-profit school for language learning and international exchange, it enters into its 21st year of English immersion programming for adults. The students come from many countries and they range in age from 18 to 65 with 35 as the average age. Each session is a unique and wonderful blend of cultures but all students are here to immerse themselves in the language and life-style of Maine. Participants arrive with an intermediate level of English language skill and three weeks of full immersion will help them gain confidence and increase ability. The goal is maximum English acquisition and the home-stay plays an important role in this building process. Students and host families are matched according to similar interests and the international guests look forward to joining hosts in some of the activities that fill our daily lives. Since there are no scheduled classes during the weekends, they have an opportunity to spend quality time with host family members. The first group of students will arrive in Rockland on Saturday, July 4 and depart on Saturday, July 25. The next group will follow a week later on Saturday, August 1 and leave on Saturday, August 22. A graduation ceremony is planned for the last Friday evening of each session. This is the final group activity and it is a special event. Host families are invited to join in the farewell reception. To learn more about the summer English Immersion Program, please refer to: www.languagelearning.org/schoolsite/summerenglish/general.html. For more information about hosting a student, call Patti Luchetti at 207-594-1084 or write to info@languagelearning.org. The School is located at 28 Gay Street in Rockland?s north end and walk-in guests are welcome to visit during regular business hours.
