Are you interested in supporting someone through the grieving process?

As part of our ongoing services for our Hospice patients, we provide bereavement support to their loved ones during the year after the Hospice patient has died. Some of our volunteers provide supportive phone calls, some provide supportive in-person meetings, some respond to requests to support a family in preparing for an upcoming loss and others help with mailings and events. We also have periodic openings for facilitators for our grief support groups. In addition, many volunteers help make Camp Dragonfly, a day-long program for grieving children and teens, happen each year.

How would I know if I’m a good fit for this?

As with many of our volunteer opportunities, strong listening skills are key. You’ll also likely be a good fit if you enjoy getting to know people and are comfortable being with them during a variety of stages through the grieving process. Our volunteers may be matched with a patient’s loved one a day after the patient has died or months later. In-person meetings might take place in a coffee shop, other public place, or in the patient’s home. In addition to listening and providing support, volunteers sometimes also help connect individuals with other helpful resources. Depending on your comfort level and preferences, you may be matched with survivors of any age.

Training Requirement:  Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice provides 12 hours of Bereavement training, 3 hours of General Volunteer training, a background check and TB testing at no cost to you. Training is typically offered twice a week for three hours over the course of two weeks. Individuals interested in co-facilitating a grief support group are provided an additional 12 of hours of Bereavement Facilitator training. Any volunteers who wish to work with Camp Dragonfly must also complete a Department of Health and Human Services background check, also offered by Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice at no cost to you.

Ongoing Commitment: At least two hours per week for one year

Dates/Times Available: Most needs are for weekday visits. Support groups are offered at both daytime and evening hours during the week.

Our homebound patients sometimes need someone to give them a ride to important medical appointments. They also sometimes need help picking up medications or groceries. We will match you with patients in your area and also offer reimbursement for much of your mileage. Despite our fantastic network of volunteers, we often have transportation requests that we are unable to fill.

How would I know if I’m a good fit for this?

If you love to drive, you’re probably already a good fit. You can also appreciate how frustrating it can be for our patients when they are unable to take care of essential needs on their own. Patience is also another essential quality if you’re interested in volunteering as a driver. There are times when things don’t go exactly as planned, whether that might be a patient who gets confused or an appointment that takes longer than expected. We’ll always be here to back you up, but it’s helpful if you’re someone who is flexible. In exchange, you will get to meet some great people, make a real difference in someone’s ability to meet some key needs and get to spend some time behind the wheel.

Are you a military veteran?

Are you interested in serving as good company for our patients who are veterans and/or recognizing their military service?

As a proud partner in the We Honor Veterans program, we are always seeking veteran volunteers who would be willing to volunteer with other veteran patients. This might mean connecting with terminally ill veteran patients by phone or visiting with them where they live. Our veteran Hospice patients also have the opportunity to have their military service recognized through a special pinning ceremony offered by our veteran volunteers. These experiences are frequently very meaningful to the patient, his or her family and our veteran volunteers.

How would I know if I’m a good fit for this?

As with our other Hospice volunteering opportunities, great listening skills are essential for this role. Our Veteran-to-Veteran program also requires volunteers to be sensitive to the wide variety of military experiences that our veteran patients have had, a range of perspectives on that service and very individualized needs in terms of how that service impacts patients and their families at the end of life. Our patients are also looking for good company, so you’re likely a good fit for this if you enjoy getting to know people and learning about their life. In addition to discussing military history and its impact, our patients might request someone who would be willing to read to them, engage in cards or games, chat with them (maybe even in French), help with cards or letters or sometimes just sit together. Visits may also provide respite time so that family members who are the patients’ primary caregivers are able to get well-deserved breaks. If you’re looking for a compassionate way to honor and respect fellow veterans at the end of their lives, we invite you to consider joining us.

Training Requirement:  Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice provides 20 hours of comprehensive Hospice training (which includes a component of veteran-specific training), a background check and TB testing at no cost to you. The usual training structure for the 20 hours of Hospice training is two training sessions per week for several weeks, with each session lasting three to four hours.

Ongoing Commitment  At least two hours per week for one year

Dates/Times Available: Most needs are for weekday visits, though veteran pinning ceremonies are sometimes requested on weekends when a patient would like more loved ones to be present.

This could include things like a shared interest in cribbage, the ability to speak (and sometimes sing) in French, openness to sitting outside in the sunshine, helping a patient record her/his life story for family members, reading aloud, helping write cards or letters, playing cards, scrapbooking or sometimes just sitting with someone. Patients sometimes have special outing wishes-—maybe a chance to have their favorite ice cream one last time. Many of our patients enjoy reflecting on their life experiences and are very appreciative of someone who is interested in listening.

Training Requirement:      Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice provides 20 hours of comprehensive Hospice training, a background check and TB testing at no cost to you. The usual training structure is two training sessions per week for several weeks, with each session lasting three to four hours.

Ongoing Commitment:     At least two hours per week for one year

Dates/Times Available:     Most needs are for weekday visits. The Hospice House does need volunteers from 4 to 8 p.m. to serve as greeters, assist in the kitchen and to visit patients. Individuals or small groups welcome for this.

The Restorative Justice Project connects volunteer mentors with residents of the Maine Coastal Regional Reentry Center (MCRRC). The MCRRC, located in Belfast, Maine, is an innovative residential program serving Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo, and Washington Counties. This facility houses up to 32 adult males classified as minimum or community security who are nearing the completion of their period of incarceration, generally 6-18 months, and who have been assessed as moderate to high risk for recidivating. The overarching goal of the MCRRC is to provide maximum support for an inmates’ successful reentry back into their home community.   Job Description  Volunteer Mentors of  Re-entry Residents Major Role:          To provide companionship and encouragement to residents to help them (1) identify and reduce risk factors for re-incarceration and (2) engage in prosocial activities that foster successful re-integration into community life.    The Mentor’s Responsibility to Mentee: Every volunteer mentor is expected to: Meet with the mentee regularly at least once a week for an hour. Commit to maintaining the mentoring relationship for 6-12 months. Respect mentee’s time, opinions, feelings and choices. Contact mentee in a timely manner if schedule changes need to be made. Engage in open, honest dialogue that balances active, respectful listening with information about alternative perspectives and choices. Provide connections to healthy prosocial community activities, people and resources. The Restorative Justice Project connects volunteer mentors with youth in our Community Resolution Conferencing Program. Community Resolution Conferencing is a forum used to address crime and wrong-doing by bringing together the person(s) harmed with the person(s) who caused the harm (usually a juvenile or adult aged 18-22)--as well as supporters, family, and community members--to talk about the incident and to come to an agreement for how the person(s) who caused the harm can take resonsibility for their actions. Each person who caused harm is matched with a volunteer mentor, who is also present at the conference.   Job Description:  Restorative Conferencing Volunteer Mentor Major Role: (1) Help your mentee complete his/her Repair Agreement by providing high support and high accountability. The Community Energy Challenge is a Greater Franklin County volunteer-based initiative that uses the simple, low-cost winterization strategy of interior storm window panels to keep heat inside homes, thus saving energy and money during the harsh winter. Panels are measured, built, and installed collaboratively with homeowners and trained volunteers working together. Workshops begin in September and volunteers are needed to help build the windows. Position Summary: A Campaign Chair has responsibility for managing the United Way Annual Campaign, with support from United Way staff and the Campaign Cabinet. The Chair is ideally, part of a team of three with the individuals representing different strengths and geographic regions. This includes identifying existing and new workplace campaigns, and monitoring activity in these campaigns at each monthly Campaign Cabinet meeting. Assist United Way staff with Campaign activities that are outside the individual workplace campaigns. (Campaign Kick-Off, Annual Meeting, etc.) Evaluate campaign upon completion and suggest changes for next year. The United Way of the Tri-Valley Area   (UWTVA) is seeking an Upward Bound student to work with the organization’s Community Resource Coordinator that serves Greater Franklin County. The student will enthusiastically assist with developing new initiatives, recruiting volunteers, and interviewing those interested in volunteering, while assisting in updating local volunteer opportunities with organizations in need of volunteers. Student will also promote and help implement selected United Way initiatives and programs. The Upward Bound student will help promote United Way and advocate for the volunteer sector by demonstrating the return on investment such as health benefits, increased employment skills, etc. Working as a representative of the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area’s Volunteer Center, this Upward Bound position requires strong communication skills, independence, and a willingness to work with people individually and in groups connected to promoting and advocating for the volunteer sector in Greater Franklin County.

At Home is a member-based, volunteer-supported program of the Washington Hancock Community Agency designed to provide older residents with core services empowering them to continue to live independently in their cherished homes. At Home provides services on the Blue Hill Peninsula/Deer Isle/Stonington and Mount Desert Island. Volunteers provide an array of services which include: transportation to medical appointments, grocery store, errands, religious services, social activities; friendly telephone calls; companionship; occasional meal preparation; small house chores and maintenance; snow shoveling; library services and reading aloud; technology support; card and letter writing; share a love of music or art. Our volunteers report that the experience makes them feel fantastic!  They love knowing that they are helping their friends and neighbors maintain their independence, while at the same time, they are supporting a sustainable organization that will be here to help them when they need it. At Home staff work with the volunteers to make sure that the volunteer's schedule is well matched to the member's needs.  We have opportunities for every level of involvment, from once a month to 7 days a week. At Home welcomes volunteers of all ages, although we ask that volunteers under age 16 be accompanied by an adult.

This volunteer work is needed nightly five days a week, Monday thur Friday and afternoons on Saturday and Sunday. It reguires sorting perishable foods for quality and putting them into proper storage areas.  It will also include setting up the shelves to display available foods for the coming day.

 Volunteer Job Description – Silent Sidekicks Fundraising Events Volunteer   Summary of Position: The Fundraising Events Volunteers will provide support in the planning and implementing of Silent Sidekicks Fundraising Events and event activities with the goal of raising funds for Silent Sidekicks’ Animal-assisted therapy, Activities, and Educational Programs in Maine.   Qualifications: Willing to gain an understanding of Silent Sidekicks’ mission, vision and programs Access to phone and computer Enjoy planning and executing events Strong organizational abilities Ability to generate and implement Fundraising Events strategies Experience coordinating events is an asset, but not required Ability to delegate tasks to others Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills; provides tact and sensitivity towards other volunteers Ability to manage multiple tasks, from small details to big picture Dedicated individual who is committed towards a great cause   Ability to build strong relationships with new people and organizations   Experience working in an home office environment        Responsible To: Executive Director   Primary Responsibilities: Attend monthly (virtual) volunteer meetings Brainstorm new fundraising opportunities; determine the success of past fundraising initiatives and update them accordingly Coordinate one annual fundraising event  Help with strategic planning of events Assist with the tasks associated with Special Events (i.e. selling tickets, dropping off and picking up materials, collecting silent auction items from businesses, recruiting volunteers, etc.)   Time Commitment:   Fixed Time: Fundraising Events meetings are held at a pre-determined time, convenient for all fundraising event volunteers, for 1-2 hours each month virtually from a home computer   Flexible Time: For Events related tasks, approximately three hours per month, varying according to personal preference, with an increase of hours as the event nears.   Length of Commitment: minimum 6 months  

Silent Sidekicks is looking for a dedicated, professional volunteer to take on the role of Media Relations. This position can be done remotely from the volunteer's home. Position includes: writing & distributing media/press releases and advisories, inviting media to events, managing local media interviews and tracking results. Time Commitment: 2 Hours per week

The primary role of the Finance Committee is to provide the expertise needed to assure the full Board that the organization is on sound financial footing by: 3. Providing oversight of the budget and other financial matters. 4. Keeping the board informed of the general financial status of the organization. 5. Writing and updating the organization’s long range financial plan. 6. Working with the administrator to develop and recommend to the Board the annual budget. 7. Ensuring that generally accepted accounting principles are practiced by the organization. 8. Performing such other responsibilities as are necessary to ensure the sound financial management of the organization.

The Institute for Humane Education in Surry, ME is seeking a volunteer with non-profit finance expertise to serve on its board of directors and on the Finance Committee. The BOD is high functioning and professional. Must be passionate about one or more (ideally all) of these issues: environmental sustainability, human rights, animal protection, education change. Three video remote and two in-person in Maine meetings.

The Coastal Children's Museum is in need of an individual or individuals to join our board of directors. Specifically, we are looking for people who have experience with grant writing, working with non profit organizations, fundraising and who have a genuine interest giving back to the children of our community. Participation on our board offers the opportunity to have a positive impact on young children and their families. We work hard to make our space a place one where children can come and explore through play and learn through discovering. Our Ways and Means volunteers raise a significant portion of our yearly budget through several annual fundraisers, including the Plant Sale, Stash Buster Craft Sale, and Brian Cramer Memorial 5K Run. Helping to plan an event makes a tremendous difference and keeps everyone fresh and ready to go! You will join a hard-working and fun group of people who really care about Vose Library and the Town of Union.

The museum has an ongoing need for auto & plane enthusiasts who have mechanic skills to help maintain its collection. Evening hours on Thursdays offer working volunteers an after hours opportunity to contribute their valuable support to the museum and have fun at the same time.

Classes for museum interpreters (tour guides) have begun and Model T driver courses will be scheduled this spring.  Our tour guides provide educational tours of the museum’s collection. If you are a history buff as it pertains to early transportation and have a passion for sharing knowledge, this class is for you. Trained Model T drivers are needed throughout the season to provide visitors with rides during regular operating hours and at OHTM events. The sound of a Model T ‘s engine will capture your heart and challenge everything you thought you knew about driving a car. Library/Archives Assistant involves documenting, accessioning archival materials, sorting, shelving, mending damaged books, inventorying, research, copy cataloging and other projects. Basic computer skills, attention to detail, organizational, understanding of historical research methods, an interest in transportation history, research or museum/archival studies.

Many high school students must complete a total of 50 hours of volunteer work to meet graduation requirements. If you know a high school student who is interested in automotive technology and is looking to fulfill their requirements in an educational and fun environment the Museum has opportunities available.

The Museum has an upcoming need for poster distribution volunteers and museum outreach ambassadors. These volunteers will be responsible for performing one of the most vital grassroots tasks in assisting the Museum in promoting our events. In addition to hitting the road and distributing event posters and materials, these volunteers will have the opportunity to act as Museum ambassadors along the way. Ideally teams of two volunteers will each hit a designated poster distribution route. Poster distribution volunteers can choose to be assigned to a local route or a long distance route. The ideal candidates will be energetic, interested in cultivating new locations for posters to be hung/ distributed and will love talking about the Museum with folks throughout the state.

Part-time help needed to answer phones, return voicemails, and possibly schedule appointments. No office experience is necessary, just a positive attitude and the ability to handle work that can sometimes be fast-paced! Shifts available are 8:00am-10:00am and 2:00pm-4:00pm.

Enrichment Classes are opportunities for youth to participate in activities that they consider fun, interesting, and worthwhile.  Classes can be a wide range of activities, projects, or discussions and should combine the teachers passions with the students interests.  These classes can be geared towards any of our K-12 youth and take place on site at Tree Street Youth.

Enrichment classes are meant to engage youth in their own educational process.  They are meant to spark passions or get students to explore and invest in passions they already have.  This process promotes self-motivation which is why we heavily encourage youth to participate but never obligate participation.
