Volunteer: Museum Caretaker

Overview

Assist in organizing and maintaining the Hill House museum for the general public. A caretaker will work together with the Executive Director and Curator to make the house presentable to visitors as well as help set up for BHS sponsored events. 

Key Responsibilities

Training

The Horizons Climbing Program is an adaptive climbing program for people of various abilities. The program takes place at EVO Rock + Fitness in Portland twice a month.

Volunteer: Farmington Farmers' Market - Info Booth Volunteer

The Info Booth Volunteer​ will play a key role in making this program a success this season, operating SNAP and Maine Harvest Bucks at the Farmington Farmers’ Market. The ​Info Booth Volunteer​ will be responsible for the successful operation of the Info Booth at the market. The ​Info Booth Volunteer​ will process credit, debit and SNAP/EBT transactions at the info booth and ensure the proper operations of the SNAP and Maine Harvest Bucks program at the market. This position is managed by the Farmington Farmers’ Market and the United Way of the Tri Valley Area. Specific responsibilities and skills needed are detailed below.

Overview The Maine Harvest Bucks incentive program helps shoppers using SNAP food supplement benefits at farmers’ markets and other local food markets to stretch their dollars and access more fresh local food. Training: ​Farmington Farmers’ Market staff will provide pre-season training, training at the market, and support as needed throughout the season. United Way of the Tri-Valley Area will provide training on basic resources and programs that may be shared with shoppers. United Way will also provide materials to be on display at the booth. United Way and Farmington Farmers’ Market will train volunteer(s) on use of the EBT/Credit/Debit machine.

Our operation is managed by one fantastic program manager, and the efforts of Amistad members who volunteer to help. In addition to this, we need the support of regular, willing and able volunteers from the community. Tasks are varied and interesting, ranging from partnering in the acquisition of food from partner programs and donors, preparing and cooking meals, and helping with general kitchen upkeep. All of the above comes with a full measure of engagement with a diverse and interesting community. It is a place where your contribution is immediately felt, and where you can truly feel part of our community and all we are trying to accomplish.

About the My Friend Matty Program:

My Friend Matty is an in-school epilepsy awareness program designed specifically for children. My Friend Matty Community Education Volunteers will visit preschool and elementary school classrooms throughout MA, ME, RI, and NH to read to students and share our My Friend Matty educational program.

Time Commitment:

The training for this program is approximately 45 minutes long. Classroom presentations are 30-45 minutes long. There is also approximately 1 hour of at-home preparation that will need to be completed before each classroom presentation. 

Trainings are held the first Thursday of every month at 12:30 and 6:30 pm!

The training will be held in our office in Wilmington, MA, and webcast for those who are not able to make it to our office.

My Friend Matty is an in-school epilepsy awareness program designed specifically for children. My Friend Matty Community Education Volunteers will visit preschool and elementary school classrooms throughout MA, ME, RI, and NH to read to students and share our My Friend Matty educational program.

Time Commitment:

The training for this program is approximately 45 minutes long. Classroom presentations are 30-45 minutes long. There is also approximately 1 hour of at-home preparation that will need to be completed before each classroom presentation. 

Trainings are held the first Thursday of every month at 12:30 and 6:30 pm!

The training will be held in our office in Wilmington, MA, and webcast for those who are not able to make it to our office.

The Team shall recommend an allocation to such agency and describe the program or programs to be funded. The Team shall meet to review any special appeal that may be requested according to established guidelines. Designation of contributions to UWTVA agencies shall be carried out in accordance with the 'First Dollar In" procedure as outlined in the policy and procedure regarding designations.

Our Peaceful Passages program provides special packages to Hospice patients that are designed to offer comfort to patients and their families at the end of life. Each special package includes an angel token, a worry stone with a special message, a candle, and a booklet of poems and prayers with a space for patients to write their thoughts, memories and feelings and a handmade comfort shawl. Each shawl is labeled “This comfort shawl was handmade for you with prayers and thoughts of love.” We have patterns available, though we also invite volunteers to use their own patterns as long as they fit within the general framework of dimensions that we will provide. Our goal is for the shawls to wrap comfortably without a patient having to hold on to them. We very much appreciate the variety of colors, patterns and textures that we receive in our donated shawls.

 

How would I know if I’m a good fit for this?

If you enjoy handcrafting things, know how to knit or crochet and would like to help someone feel cozy, comforted and thought of at the end of their life, then this is the perfect job for you.

As with many of our volunteer opportunities, strong listening skills are key. You’ll also likely be a good fit if you enjoy getting to know people and are comfortable being with them during a variety of stages through the grieving process. Our volunteers may be matched with a patient’s loved one a day after the patient has died or months later. In-person meetings might take place in a coffee shop, other public place, or in the patient’s home. In addition to listening and providing support, volunteers sometimes also help connect individuals with other helpful resources. Depending on your comfort level and preferences, you may be matched with survivors of any age.

 

Training Requirement:  Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice provides 12 hours of Bereavement training, 3 hours of General Volunteer training, a background check and TB testing at no cost to you. Training is typically offered twice a week for three hours over the course of two weeks. Individuals interested in co-facilitating a grief support group are provided an additional 12 of hours of Bereavement Facilitator training. Any volunteers who wish to work with Camp Dragonfly must also complete a Department of Health and Human Services background check, also offered by Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice at no cost to you.

 

Ongoing Commitment: At least two hours per week for one year

Qualifications: A passion and caring for the mission and purposes of Gbokpasom an outcomes orientation, knowing how to effectively capture impact/outcome information and utilize it well in communications. A minimum of two years of senior management-level leadership experience. Professional, highly effective written, verbal and presentational communication skills. Proven strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain important relationships with institutions, professionals and clients. Demonstrated success in operational and financial oversight, strategic planning, organizational development and nonprofit governance. Technological understanding of, and experience with computer software programs and systems, and a demonstrated ability to manage the development of an interactive, engaging website. An interest in and ability to explore and develop additional resources that enhance the Organizations work, while honoring the rich history and work of the organization. Ability to interact effectively with the Board of Directors and demonstrated prior experience in working with a Board. Extensive experience in International Aid Organization functions is highly desired. A bachelor degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred. Please note! As with our other Hospice volunteering opportunities, great listening skills are essential for this role. Our Veteran-to-Veteran program also requires volunteers to be sensitive to the wide variety of military experiences that our veteran patients have had, a range of perspectives on that service and very individualized needs in terms of how that service impacts patients and their families at the end of life. Our patients are also looking for good company, so you’re likely a good fit for this if you enjoy getting to know people and learning about their life. Any volunteers who wish to work with Camp Dragonfly must also complete a Department of Health and Human Services background check, also offered by Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice at no cost to you.

 

Ongoing Commitment: At least two hours per week for one year

 

Dates/Times Available: Most needs are for weekday visits. Support groups are offered at both daytime and evening hours during the week.

Volunteer: Comfort Shawl Knitters & Crocheters

Do you love to knit or crochet?

Our Peaceful Passages program provides special packages to Hospice patients that are designed to offer comfort to patients and their families at the end of life. Each special package includes an angel token, a worry stone with a special message, a candle, and a booklet of poems and prayers with a space for patients to write their thoughts, memories and feelings and a handmade comfort shawl. Each shawl is labeled “This comfort shawl was handmade for you with prayers and thoughts of love.” We have patterns available, though we also invite volunteers to use their own patterns as long as they fit within the general framework of dimensions that we will provide. Our goal is for the shawls to wrap comfortably without a patient having to hold on to them. We very much appreciate the variety of colors, patterns and textures that we receive in our donated shawls.

 

How would I know if I’m a good fit for this?

If you enjoy handcrafting things, know how to knit or crochet and would like to help someone feel cozy, comforted and thought of at the end of their life, then this is the perfect job for you.

 

Training Requirement:  No required training.
