Volunteer: Fundraising Support

We are looking for support for our current fundraising initiatives. he Mid-Coast Recovery Coalition owns two recovery residences now, one for men in Rockland (called the “Friends House”) and the other in Camden for women in recovery and their children (due to open this summer). We are committed to accommodating as many people who would benefit from safe and supportive housing as we can.

Currently, we are allowed only 4 men in our men’s house due to the stairs not meeting fire code. Once we fix the stairs, we would be allowed to accommodate 16 men. It is estimated that the cost of renovations will be $100,000. We feel we can generate income that will cover half that cost so need to raise another $50,000 to help another dozen men by the end of this summer.

The new stair tower, named in memory and in honor of Ryan Gamage, a man in recovery who wanted to build the tower but who died of a drug overdose himself in January, will have about 50 stairs. We would like 50 individuals or groups of individuals to each buy one step in the stair tower for $1000 each and to have a plaque with the names of the donors on those steps to recognize the contributions. Please ask friends and family to join with you to raise $1000 so you can pay for one of the 50 steps.

Are you great at connecting with donors in the community? Are you a donor yourself? We would love to talk with you and for your support in helping us accomplish these goals.

Volunteer: Help Hungry kids and seniors!-Supplemental Nutrition Programs Packer

The Packer helps assemble bags for two supplemental nutrition programs. The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) works to improve the health of low-income elderly people at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with bags of nutritious USDA commodity foods. Volunteers help prepare CSFP food bags for the state of Maine. The Food Bank distributes over 9,000 CSFP food packages each month to partner agencies across the state.

More than 80,000 Maine children qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program. These meals are the fuel they need to get them through the week. What happens to these children when they go home over the weekend? Good Shepherd Food Bank's BackPack Program provides children who are suffering the effects of chronic hunger with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food to eat during weekends and school vacations when those crucial school meals are unavailable. Volunteers help pack bags for over 1,000 food insecure children in 39 different schools.

This volunteer role suits someone looking to volunteer as an individual or with friends as a group. Volunteers work in an assembly line process in order to pack with proficiency and efficiency.

Volunteer: APO - Senior Buddy Program

The Senior Buddy Program focuses on reducing loneliness that is often found in seniors who do not have enough social interactions. The goal is to match UMF students (and community members) with a local resident at one of Farmington's assisted living facilities. The idea is for the student to visit weekly with their 'Buddy' at their convenience. The role of the students would be to provide more social interactions, by listening to their stories, having lunch together, talking, playing board games or cribbage, listening to music, etc. This program wants to ensure reliability, as research shows loneliness can actually increase if the social interactions suddenly stopped. The hope is to also get more students interested in the aging population!

Volunteer: Horse Leaders and Side Walkers in riding lessons

A typical therapeutic riding lesson has one to three volunteers and an instructor working with a rider in the horse barn and the riding arena. This therapeutic team helps the rider learn how to groom, saddle and ride a horse. Individual goals and riding plans are made at the start of the session and reviewed before each lesson. The rider may play games on horseback, maneuver around obstacles and/or develop his/her skills to learn to ride without physical support or even without a horse leader. Therapeutic riding is a way to develop confidence, balance, strength, coordination and endurance. The primary responsibility of the lesson HORSE LEADER is management of the horse and ensuring rider safety both on the ground and once mounted. The horse leader must have experience working with horses. The primary responsibility of the lesson SIDE WALKER is to support and interact with the rider. Specific horse experience is not necessary but side walkers must be comfortable around horses. Both positions require good communication skills, a willingness to work as a team and a desire to help others.

Volunteer: Companionship for Hospice Patients

Are you interested in serving as good company for terminally ill patients?

We are always looking for compassionate individuals who are interested in supporting terminally ill patients in their homes, in nursing facilities or at our Hospice House. These volunteers provide vital companionship to patients and crucial respite breaks for caregivers. Some volunteers also assist with critical needs like grocery shopping, medication pick-up or transportation.

How would I know if I’m a good fit for this?

The most essential skill for this role is great listening skills. If you are someone who enjoys getting to know people, this is likely a good fit for you. In addition to trying to find opportunities to volunteer close to your home, we also match patients and volunteers based on interests and requests. This could include things like a shared interest in cribbage, the ability to speak (and sometimes sing) in French, openness to sitting outside in the sunshine, helping a patient record her/his life story for family members, reading aloud, helping write cards or letters, playing cards, scrapbooking or sometimes just sitting with someone. Patients sometimes have special outing wishes-—maybe a chance to have their favorite ice cream one last time. Many of our patients enjoy reflecting on their life experiences and are very appreciative of someone who is interested in listening.

Training Requirement:      Androscoggin Home Healthcare & Hospice provides 21 hours of comprehensive Hospice training, a background check and TB testing at no cost to you. The usual training structure is two training sessions per week for several weeks, with each session lasting three to four hours.

Ongoing Commitment:     At least two hours per week for one year

Dates/Times Available:     Most needs are for weekday visits. The Hospice House does need volunteers from 4 to 8 p.m. to serve as greeters, assist in the kitchen and to visit patients. Individuals or small groups welcome for this.

Next Steps: Respond here and we will schedule a time to talk with you by phone to review options and share upcoming training times. We also invite you to visit our website at www.androscoggin.org for more information on our organization.

Special Note:  We ask that anyone who has experienced the recent loss of a loved one wait at least one year before becoming a Hospice volunteer.

Volunteer: Office Volunteers - Lewiston

Are you a person who enjoys:

Bringing order to things?

Connecting with patients by phone?

Utilizing your computer skills?

Helping to get mailings out the door?

If so, you will enjoy volunteering in our offices. There are a wide range of projects that you can support, ranging from filing, preparing packets for patients, organizing materials for volunteer trainings, entering data into a variety of spreadsheets, making phone calls to check on patient satisfaction or patient needs, helping to get mailings out or any number of other projects. You’ll be matched with specific projects based on your interests, experience and schedule.

How would I know if I’m a good fit for this?

The answer really varies on this one. If you enjoy connecting with people on the phone, you’d likely be a good fit for some of our phone check-ins. Some of our happiest office project volunteers are people who love to take ownership of getting a project completed, a mailing sent out or packets ready for whoever needs them next. Other office volunteers really enjoy the chance to work with other volunteers and work as a team on whatever needs to be done that week. If you enjoy word processing and/or spreadsheet work, we often have both short-term and ongoing work using those skills. And if you have an eye for color and design, we sometimes have special projects that could benefit from those skills, too. Technical skills can be a plus as well. Again, we really work to match volunteers with the office projects that will be the best fit for them.

Training Requirement:    Androscoggin Home Healthcare & Hospice provides six hours of training, a background check and TB testing at no cost to you.

Ongoing Commitment:     At least two hours per week for one year

Dates/Times Available:     Most needs are Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Next Steps: Respond here and we will schedule a time to talk with you by phone to review options and share upcoming training times. We also invite you to visit our website at www.androscoggin.org for more information on our organization.

Volunteer: Driving for Patient Appointments & Errands

Do you love to drive?

Our homebound patients sometimes need someone to give them a ride to important medical appointments. They also sometimes need help picking up medications or groceries. We will match you with patients in your area and also offer reimbursement for much of your mileage. Despite our fantastic network of volunteers, we often have transportation requests that we are unable to fill.

How would I know if I’m a good fit for this?

If you love to drive, you’re probably already a good fit. You can also appreciate how frustrating it can be for our patients when they are unable to take care of essential needs on their own. Patience is also another essential quality if you’re interested in volunteering as a driver. There are times when things don’t go exactly as planned, whether that might be a patient who gets confused or an appointment that takes longer than expected. We’ll always be here to back you up, but it’s helpful if you’re someone who is flexible. In exchange, you will get to meet some great people, make a real difference in someone’s ability to meet some key needs and get to spend some time behind the wheel.

Volunteer: Community-Based Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Big Couples are needed

There are currently 20 children on the waiting list for the right match with a Big Brother, Big Sister or Big Couple. Some children wait as long as 2 years for a compatible match with a mentor. Please contact us to get involved in starting something great for a child in your community! In the Community Program, Bigs spend 8-12 hours or 2-4 visits per month with their Littles, and commit at least one year to developing a relationship. This program offers flexibility to share a variety of activities with a child during times that fit into your schedule. Bigs in our Community Program are adults, 18 and older, who volunteer to spend some time each month mentoring a child. Our Bigs demonstrate stability, responsibility, and dependability. The role of the Big is to be a friend, not a surrogate parent, entertainer or babysitter. Bigs help their Littles expand their horizons, improve their ability to think and learn, develop new relationships, go to new places, learn about being a good person and valuable member of society, and perhaps most importantly, have fun doing it. Our Littles are children between the ages of 6 through 18 who are facing adversity. Typically, either a parent or school representative makes a request for the child to have a mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters strives to serve the children who need us most, including those living in single parent homes, growing up in poverty and coping with parental incarceration. All Littles and their parent/guardian have expressed a desire to have a mentor. Matches are created according to similar interests, compatible personality traits, and the needs of children, volunteers, and their families. Together matches spend time enjoying activities that might include walking, hiking, swimming, biking, snowshoeing, sledding, boating, seeing a movie, creating a craft or art project, preparing a meal, volunteering, and more! Become friends with a child and the opportunities to have fun and make a difference are endless.

Volunteer: Tour Guides

We will train you to conduct a full tour or become well-versed in one or more aspects of the tour. Start with inventors and early history; learn to operate and demonstrate manual switchboards, introduce visitors to early dial systems; help interpret more complex switching systems – and gather passengers for a (virtual) boat trip to see the (actual) Island Telephone Company’s central office. NO TELEPHONE EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Of course, it’s an asset, but we’re sure you will find a place at the museum where you can bring – and share - your own experiences and enthusiasm.
