Volunteer: Volunteers NeededThough Civil Air Patrol is known for its flying missions, CAP adults members, known as Senior Members, do so much more than just fly. In fact less than a fifth of all CAP members are pilots or aircrew members. CAP adult members come from all walks of life. Some are doctors, nurses, paramedics, or other medical professionals. Others are lawyers, paralegals, accountants, computer programmers, and other business professionals and executives. Really just about any career or background can be useful to and found in the ranks of the CAP adult membership. CAP supports a variety of missions that require adults from all walks of life. In emergency services and operations CAP not only need aircrew members, but also ground team members to aid in the rescue of survivors or to assess damage after a disaster. CAP needs communications personnel to relay critical messages when there is limited or no telephone support. Administrative staff, financial managers, logistics and supply personnel are needed to document missions and get personnel critical supplies and equipment in the field that they need to conduct missions. CAP also needs adults to support the cadet program. CAP has over 23,000 cadets across the country that need mentors willing to help guide and support them. The cadet program provides young adults between the ages of 12 and 21 a well-rounded program of leadership, aerospace education, physical fitness, and moral and ethical decision making. In today’s world, we need good people who are willing to step up and help provide a healthy, drug-free environment to develop tomorrow’s leaders. Many former cadets have gone into the military, government jobs, or private sector employment where they can and do make a difference, and really excel. There are many military general officers that were once CAP cadets. Senators and congressman, CEOs and others credit their success to CAP and the adult members who mentored them. CAP needs adults for its aerospace education program. In addition to educating our own members, CAP’s adult leaders provide training and resources to teachers who reach out to students of all ages across the country. Aviation and aerospace impacts the lives of Americans every day, and CAP works to ensure that citizens know how valuable aviation and aerospace is in our world. Volunteer: Volunteers for Victims of Domestic ViolenceBE AN AGENT OF CHANGE! Through These Doors offers a number of unique ways to become a part of the movement for ending domestic violence in our community. Use your talents to strive for peace, support survivors and their children, share your experiences and learn new skills. At Through These Doors, we believe volunteering is at it’s best when the talents and passions of the volunteer and the needs of the organization line up. Our commitment is to explore your interests and skills and help determine where you can be of most service to the survivors we support. Currently, the area where we need critical support is from direct service volunteers. These folks engage with survivors directly, providing emotional support, safety planning, information about partner abuse and resources. There are several ways direct service volunteers can support survivors including, but not limited to, helping to staff our 24-hour confidential helpline and facilitating support groups. To become a direct service volunteer, you will be required to participate in our 44-hour Core Comprehensive Advocacy, Intervention, Response, and Ethics Training (CAIRET). During this training, you will learn about the dynamics of abuse, the cultural roots of violence and oppression, and the core components of social change advocacy. Our training also incorporates active listening skills, how to provide support in a non-judgmental way, trauma-informed best practices, all while learning about Through These Doors' programs, procedures, and philosophy in order to support survivors and their families in the best way possible. We typically offer our direct service volunteer training three times annually. Please contact us to find out about our next training dates. Volunteer: Fundraising SupportWe are looking for support for our current fundraising initiatives. he Mid-Coast Recovery Coalition owns two recovery residences now, one for men in Rockland (called the “Friends House”) and the other in Camden for women in recovery and their children (due to open this summer). We are committed to accommodating as many people who would benefit from safe and supportive housing as we can. Currently, we are allowed only 4 men in our men’s house due to the stairs not meeting fire code. Once we fix the stairs, we would be allowed to accommodate 16 men. Volunteer: APO - Senior Buddy ProgramThe Senior Buddy Program focuses on reducing loneliness that is often found in seniors who do not have enough social interactions. The goal is to match UMF students (and community members) with a local resident at one of Farmington's assisted living facilities. The idea is for the student to visit weekly with their 'Buddy' at their convenience. The role of the students would be to provide more social interactions, by listening to their stories, having lunch together, talking, playing board games or cribbage, listening to music, etc. This program wants to ensure reliability, as research shows loneliness can actually increase if the social interactions suddenly stopped. The hope is to also get more students interested in the aging population! Volunteer: Companionship for Hospice PatientsAre you interested in serving as good company for terminally ill patients? We are always looking for compassionate individuals who are interested in supporting terminally ill patients in their homes, in nursing facilities or at our Hospice House. These volunteers provide vital companionship to patients and crucial respite breaks for caregivers. Some volunteers also assist with critical needs like grocery shopping, medication pick-up or transportation.
How would I know if I’m a good fit for this? The most essential skill for this role is great listening skills. If you are someone who enjoys getting to know people, this is likely a good fit for you. In addition to trying to find opportunities to volunteer close to your home, we also match patients and volunteers based on interests and requests. This could include things like a shared interest in cribbage, the ability to speak (and sometimes sing) in French, openness to sitting outside in the sunshine, helping a patient record her/his life story for family members, reading aloud, helping write cards or letters, playing cards, scrapbooking or sometimes just sitting with someone. Patients sometimes have special outing wishes-—maybe a chance to have their favorite ice cream one last time. Many of our patients enjoy reflecting on their life experiences and are very appreciative of someone who is interested in listening.
Training Requirement: Androscoggin Home Healthcare & Hospice provides 21 hours of comprehensive Hospice training, a background check and TB testing at no cost to you. The usual training structure is two training sessions per week for several weeks, with each session lasting three to four hours.
Ongoing Commitment: At least two hours per week for one year
Dates/Times Available: Most needs are for weekday visits. The Hospice House does need volunteers from 4 to 8 p.m. to serve as greeters, assist in the kitchen and to visit patients. Individuals or small groups welcome for this.
Next Steps: Respond here and we will schedule a time to talk with you by phone to review options and share upcoming training times. We also invite you to visit our website at www.androscoggin.org for more information on our organization. Special Note: We ask that anyone who has experienced the recent loss of a loved one wait at least one year before becoming a Hospice volunteer. Volunteer: Office Volunteers - LewistonAre you a person who enjoys: Bringing order to things? Connecting with patients by phone? Utilizing your computer skills? Helping to get mailings out the door? If so, you will enjoy volunteering in our offices. There are a wide range of projects that you can support, ranging from filing, preparing packets for patients, organizing materials for volunteer trainings, entering data into a variety of spreadsheets, making phone calls to check on patient satisfaction or patient needs, helping to get mailings out or any number of other projects. You’ll be matched with specific projects based on your interests, experience and schedule.
How would I know if I’m a good fit for this? The answer really varies on this one. If you enjoy connecting with people on the phone, you’d likely be a good fit for some of our phone check-ins. Some of our happiest office project volunteers are people who love to take ownership of getting a project completed, a mailing sent out or packets ready for whoever needs them next. Other office volunteers really enjoy the chance to work with other volunteers and work as a team on whatever needs to be done that week. If you enjoy word processing and/or spreadsheet work, we often have both short-term and ongoing work using those skills. And if you have an eye for color and design, we sometimes have special projects that could benefit from those skills, too. Technical skills can be a plus as well. Again, we really work to match volunteers with the office projects that will be the best fit for them.
Training Requirement: Androscoggin Home Healthcare & Hospice provides six hours of training, a background check and TB testing at no cost to you.
Ongoing Commitment: At least two hours per week for one year
Dates/Times Available: Most needs are Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Volunteer: Driving for Patient Appointments & ErrandsDo you love to drive? Our homebound patients sometimes need someone to give them a ride to important medical appointments. They also sometimes need help picking up medications or groceries. We will match you with patients in your area and also offer reimbursement for much of your mileage. Despite our fantastic network of volunteers, we often have transportation requests that we are unable to fill.
How would I know if I’m a good fit for this? If you love to drive, you’re probably already a good fit. You can also appreciate how frustrating it can be for our patients when they are unable to take care of essential needs on their own. Patience is also another essential quality if you’re interested in volunteering as a driver. There are times when things don’t go exactly as planned, whether that might be a patient who gets confused or an appointment that takes longer than expected. We’ll always be here to back you up, but it’s helpful if you’re someone who is flexible. In exchange, you will get to meet some great people, make a real difference in someone’s ability to meet some key needs and get to spend some time behind the wheel.
Training Requirement: Androscoggin Home Healthcare & Hospice provides six hours of training, a background check and TB testing at no cost to you.

Special Note: Our volunteer drivers use their own vehicles, so in addition to a valid driver’s license and clean driving record, you need to have a vehicle in good working condition and up to date auto insurance.

Volunteer: Community-Based Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Big Couples are neededThere are currently 20 children on the waiting list for the right match with a Big Brother, Big Sister or Big Couple. Some children wait as long as 2 years for a compatible match with a mentor. Please contact us to get involved in starting something great for a child in your community! In the Community Program, Bigs spend 8-12 hours or 2-4 visits per month with their Littles, and commit at least one year to developing a relationship. This program offers flexibility to share a variety of activities with a child during times that fit into your schedule. Bigs in our Community Program are adults, 18 and older, who volunteer to spend some time each month mentoring a child. Our Bigs demonstrate stability, responsibility, and dependability. The role of the Big is to be a friend, not a surrogate parent, entertainer or babysitter. Bigs help their Littles expand their horizons, improve their ability to think and learn, develop new relationships, go to new places, learn about being a good person and valuable member of society, and perhaps most importantly, have fun doing it. Our Littles are children between the ages of 6 through 18 who are facing adversity. Typically, either a parent or school representative makes a request for the child to have a mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters strives to serve the children who need us most, including those living in single parent homes, growing up in poverty and coping with parental incarceration. All Littles and their parent/guardian have expressed a desire to have a mentor. Matches are created according to similar interests, compatible personality traits, and the needs of children, volunteers, and their families. Together matches spend time enjoying activities that might include walking, hiking, swimming, biking, snowshoeing, sledding, boating, seeing a movie, creating a craft or art project, preparing a meal, volunteering, and more! Become friends with a child and the opportunities to have fun and make a difference are endless.
