Volunteer: Asylum-seeking family in Portland- mom from Haiti & dad from Angola & 1 year old son

What does mentoring look like? That’s up to you and the family. In less complicated times, we like our mentors to take a more hands-on approach to help mentees integrate into the community- such as including them in family outings & introducing them to the area. Currently, mentoring can be done while social distancing and some support can be provided remotely. Checking in regularly, sending along translated info regarding COVID-19, helping mentees locate resources- these are all things that can be done while maintaining safe distance. We still ask that anyone applying to mentor through WTS live local to the Portland area, so that you can begin an in-person relationship with your mentees once you feel safe doing so.

Through Welcoming the Stranger, mentors have access to a large network of individuals and groups already engaged with the immigrant community who can offer support and guidance if specific needs — housing, schooling, medical care, etc. — arise. As a mentor, your primary task is simply to be there for newly arrived folks who would otherwise feel alone in a strange world. You don’t have to be an expert, just a friend.   Specifically, Welcoming the Stranger is actively looking for volunteers willing to enter into a mentoring “friendship” with an asylum-seeking family in Portland. The father is from Angola and has a background in mechanics and logistics.  The mother is from Haiti and has experience in cosmetology, housekeeping, and childcare. Together they have a wonderful 1 year old son. They both speak French and are learning English quickly- and would love a mentor who can help them progress further. They are also hoping for help with navigating housing & general support within their community for themselves and their son.    Interested in making a difference? We have a list of families waiting for mentors! Go to https://wtsmaine.com/mentors/#

Volunteer: Gleaning volunteers - Connect fresh produce from local farms to food banks!

Healthy Communities of the Capital Area is working to rebuild a gleaning network in southern Kennebec county, and we need volunteers to help! Gleaning involves rescuing unsold or unharvested crops from farms and farmers' markets and redistributing them to those in need. As a volunteer, you will get the chance to connect with farmers and growers, support sustainable food systems, and reduce hunger within your community.

We are looking for individuals who would be able to assist in harvesting and clearing out unsold produce during the upcoming growing season. We also need volunteers to transport it to the Augusta Food Bank for distribution. Shifts would last about 2 hours, but timing is flexible. If you have other skills to offer in social media, outreach, photography, or any other ideas for how you'd like to be involved, we'd love to hear about them!

Volunteer: Trek Across Maine Office Volunteers Needed

Throughout the year, most often from December - April, the American Lung Association is in need of a few dedicated office volunteers to come in on occasion and help with some of our projects in preparation for the Trek Across Maine in June. Projects are generally held in the office setting, usually require sitting for a majority of the time, and require acute attention to detail. Our office volunteers help inventory and organize supplies for the Trek, assemble mailings, and assemble packets which are custom prepared for each of our event participants.

If you would like to be notified specifically by email when we have need for volunteers, please register here and we will reach out to you to confirm your information. As we have projects ready, we will contact you to see if you are available to come in.

We appreciate our volunteers and respect that this time and work is donated. Thank you in advance for helping us put on the most successful fundraiser for the American Lung Association in the country!

Volunteer: Volunteers Needed

Though Civil Air Patrol is known for its flying missions, CAP adults members, known as Senior Members, do so much more than just fly. In fact less than a fifth of all CAP members are pilots or aircrew members. CAP adult members come from all walks of life. Some are doctors, nurses, paramedics, or other medical professionals. Others are lawyers, paralegals, accountants, computer programmers, and other business professionals and executives. Really just about any career or background can be useful to and found in the ranks of the CAP adult membership. CAP supports a variety of missions that require adults from all walks of life.

In emergency services and operations CAP not only need aircrew members, but also ground team members to aid in the rescue of survivors or to assess damage after a disaster. CAP needs communications personnel to relay critical messages when there is limited or no telephone support.  Administrative staff, financial managers, logistics and supply personnel are needed to document missions and get personnel critical supplies and equipment in the field that they need to conduct missions.

CAP also needs adults to support the cadet program. CAP has over 23,000 cadets across the country that need mentors willing to help guide and support them. The cadet program provides young adults between the ages of 12 and 21 a well-rounded program of leadership, aerospace education, physical fitness, and moral and ethical decision making. In today’s world, we need good people who are willing to step up and help provide a healthy, drug-free environment to develop tomorrow’s leaders. Many former cadets have gone into the military, government jobs, or private sector employment where they can and do make a difference, and really excel. There are many military general officers that were once CAP cadets.  Senators and congressman, CEOs and others credit their success to CAP and the adult members who mentored them.

CAP needs adults for its aerospace education program. In addition to educating our own members, CAP’s adult leaders provide training and resources to teachers who reach out to students of all ages across the country.  Aviation and aerospace impacts the lives of Americans every day, and CAP works to ensure that citizens know how valuable aviation and aerospace is in our world.

Volunteer: Volunteers for Victims of Domestic Violence

BE AN AGENT OF CHANGE!

Through These Doors offers a number of unique ways to become a part of the movement for ending domestic violence in our community. Use your talents to strive for peace, support survivors and their children, share your experiences and learn new skills.

At Through These Doors, we believe volunteering is at it’s best when the talents and passions of the volunteer and the needs of the organization line up. Our commitment is to explore your interests and skills and help determine where you can be of most service to the survivors we support.

Currently, the area where we need critical support is from direct service volunteers. These folks engage with survivors directly, providing emotional support, safety planning, information about partner abuse and resources. There are several ways direct service volunteers can support survivors including, but not limited to, helping to staff our 24-hour confidential helpline and facilitating support groups.

To become a direct service volunteer, you will be required to participate in our 44-hour Core Comprehensive Advocacy, Intervention, Response, and Ethics Training (CAIRET). During this training, you will learn about the dynamics of abuse, the cultural roots of violence and oppression, and the core components of social change advocacy. Our training also incorporates active listening skills, how to provide support in a non-judgmental way, trauma-informed best practices, all while learning about Through These Doors' programs, procedures, and philosophy in order to support survivors and their families in the best way possible.

We typically offer our direct service volunteer training three times annually. Please contact us to find out about our next training dates.

Volunteer: Fundraising Support

We are looking for support for our current fundraising initiatives. he Mid-Coast Recovery Coalition owns two recovery residences now, one for men in Rockland (called the “Friends House”) and the other in Camden for women in recovery and their children (due to open this summer). We are committed to accommodating as many people who would benefit from safe and supportive housing as we can.

Currently, we are allowed only 4 men in our men’s house due to the stairs not meeting fire code. Once we fix the stairs, we would be allowed to accommodate 16 men. It is estimated that the cost of renovations will be $100,000. We feel we can generate income that will cover half that cost so need to raise another $50,000 to help another dozen men by the end of this summer.

The new stair tower, named in memory and in honor of Ryan Gamage, a man in recovery who wanted to build the tower but who died of a drug overdose himself in January, will have about 50 stairs. We would like 50 individuals or groups of individuals to each buy one step in the stair tower for $1000 each and to have a plaque with the names of the donors on those steps to recognize the contributions. Please ask friends and family to join with you to raise $1000 so you can pay for one of the 50 steps.

Are you great at connecting with donors in the community? Are you a donor yourself? We would love to talk with you and for your support in helping us accomplish these goals.

Volunteer: Help Hungry kids and seniors!-Supplemental Nutrition Programs Packer

The Packer helps assemble bags for two supplemental nutrition programs. The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) works to improve the health of low-income elderly people at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with bags of nutritious USDA commodity foods. Volunteers help prepare CSFP food bags for the state of Maine. The Food Bank distributes over 9,000 CSFP food packages each month to partner agencies across the state.

More than 80,000 Maine children qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program. These meals are the fuel they need to get them through the week. What happens to these children when they go home over the weekend? Good Shepherd Food Bank's BackPack Program provides children who are suffering the effects of chronic hunger with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food to eat during weekends and school vacations when those crucial school meals are unavailable. Volunteers help pack bags for over 1,000 food insecure children in 39 different schools.

This volunteer role suits someone looking to volunteer as an individual or with friends as a group. Volunteers work in an assembly line process in order to pack with proficiency and efficiency.

Volunteer: APO - Senior Buddy Program

The Senior Buddy Program focuses on reducing loneliness that is often found in seniors who do not have enough social interactions. The goal is to match UMF students (and community members) with a local resident at one of Farmington's assisted living facilities. The idea is for the student to visit weekly with their 'Buddy' at their convenience. The role of the students would be to provide more social interactions, by listening to their stories, having lunch together, talking, playing board games or cribbage, listening to music, etc. This program wants to ensure reliability, as research shows loneliness can actually increase if the social interactions suddenly stopped. The hope is to also get more students interested in the aging population!

This will likely involve manual labor to lift and move boxes, carry items around, etc. We may also need assistance opening and sorting donations, separating them by category to be stocked on shelves or put into the warehouse. We also have sit down tasks available to accommodate group members with physical restrictions.

For more information please contact Ruth or Lisa at office3rs@gmail.com or call 207-699-5565.
