Requests are sent to us by Maine agencies on behalf of individuals and families in need of basic necessities. Volunteers “shop” our donation center to gather clothing and household items. Come join our great crew and be a part of making a difference for our neighbors. Onsite training is provided.

Working under the direction of experienced volunteer team leaders, volunteers sort, organize and store donations (clothing, housewares, toiletries, etc.) Volunteers also "go shopping" in the space to fill requests from caseworkers for individuals and families. Fun environment, important work. You will come away with a sense of accomplishment and a stronger sense of community knowing you are helping to meet the basic needs of our neighbors.

Do you want to volunteer but prefer to do it from home or in one location?
You can with our hospice patient call program.
You can either call patients from your own home or come into the office and do it from there.
You make calls weekly checking in on the patients to see if they need anything before the weekend.
You have a provided script we give you to ask the questions and write them down for each patient. This volunteer opportunity is a great way to interact with the patients and their families to check in on how they are doing.

Administrative volunteers promote hospice care by helping perform clerical assignments in an office setting. These assignments can include helping process mail outs, filing, data entry, answering phones, restocking supplies, making packets, plus many other tasks.

Gentiva Volunteer orientation is provided free of charge to help you learn the skills required to be an outstanding Office Volunteer. Volunteers are needed between the hours of 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday.

We need classroom volunteers to work with students around literacy and math. We are a PreK-5 school with a diverse population with lots of needs.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary responsibilities will include working with operations and other departments to determine the need for and to recruit volunteers to fulfill these plans. This person receives, reviews and processes all applications that are received and helps to recommend these volunteers to the appropriate department.

PRIMARY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Research, devise, and implement effective volunteer recruitment, retention, and communication strategies through the use of the website, print media, community calendars, public speaking, attendance at community meetings and events, etc.
• Train, mentor, and serve as initial primary contact for all volunteers (excluding fosters)
• Provide direction to volunteer program leaders to train and serve as primary contact for volunteers specific to their area (ie. volunteer adoption coordinators,)
• Prepare for, schedule, and provide regular volunteer orientations
• Keep all volunteer materials and programs up to date for use by staff and volunteer leaders.
• Partner with shelter staff to develop new volunteer programs.
● Uphold the shelter’s values and mission statement during interactions with the public and other staff
● Report to the Operations Director about any challenges with volunteer programs, volunteers, or staff involved with volunteer programs, and work to devise solutions to these issues.
● Track data on volunteer programs, and utilize it to create a monthly volunteer report to be submitted to management by the second Wednesday of each month

Family Caregiver volunteers are needed to assist with support groups and Powerful Tools for Caregivers training. Support groups are held in each county every month (Washington County is the only county left to administer a support group). We also offer a support group each month via Zoom, so comfortability around tech is highly recommended. Our Powerful Tools for Caregivers replaces the SAVVY support group but still offers Caregivers training to learn about how to be better caregivers for their loved ones while also focusing on the importance of self-care. Training can take place in-house once the FCG Specialists complete the train-the-trainer training (planned for 2024).

The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) provides local, in-depth, and objective insurance counseling and assistance to Medicare-eligible individuals, their families, and caregivers. 

SHIP volunteers for EAAA assist individuals with Medicare in the following ways:

Provide one-on-one counseling to review medical or prescription drug plan options for those new to Medicare and during Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment periods. 

* Connect individuals struggling to afford Medicare premiums and copays to programs that can reduce their costs.

* Educate consumers about how Medicare works, including eligibility guidelines and Medicare’s relationship to Medigap plans, retiree coverage, MaineCare, and other insurance.

Extensive training is provided to volunteers, including job shadowing. Volunteers are asked to do 4-6 hours per week and are needed in Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock, and Washington Counties.

PSL/STRIVE is looking for volunteer teachers in our STRIVE Studios art program!

Projects incorporate technical skills and personal interests to further develop individual artwork, with support from staff as needed. 

STRIVE Studios currently offers ceramics, painting, sewing, screen printing, beading, digital photography, yoga, movement, music therapy and more. There are also work-trade opportunities available! Class curriculum and schedule is up to the instructor. STRIVE is looking for volunteers to work in it's Tweens Program.

Tweens is a social program for our members aged 11-14. Held each Friday afternoon from 3:30-5:30, Tweens provides a safe, structured atmosphere to expand social opportunities for middle school students. Whether it is dance class, a baking lesson or an afternoon of arts and crafts, each week consists of an engaging activity lead by community members or STRIVE staff, designed for this age group.

Hello! Food AND Medicine is a member-based organization that believes people shouldn't have to choose between food, medicine, and other basic necessities. Our members are a vital part of our organization and essential to the work we do in the Greater Bangor area. 

We're looking for folks that would like to phone bank with us to remind our existing members to renew their memberships as well as sign up potential new members. 

Volunteer phone bankers will be given a list of folks to call and a call script to be used as needed to guide them through their phone calls. Volunteers are welcome to come to our location to phone bank with us in person (snacks provided!) or to make their calls from home. Either way, Food AND Medicine staff will be available to answer any questions that come up. 

Our first phone banking shift will be 3/27 at 5pm.

Our Community Supports Day programs are seeking volunteers to regularly work with our clients on activities such as arts and crafts, reading, music, cooking, or anything that you're passionate about. Come share your skills and interests with our groups of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and support them in developing relationships with the broader community!

Our programs in Scarborough, Gray, and Wells are open Monday through Friday from 8am-4pm and we would love volunteers to come on a weekly or biweekly basis.  Please reach out and let us know what you would be interested in!

Trekkers created the One to One Program for students who could benefit from one-on-one mentoring from caring adults within their community. Unlike our expedition-based programs, One to One provides the necessary infrastructure for you and a student to meet, connect and build a meaningful relationship by spending time together in the community.

We will match you and a student together based upon gender and shared interests and experiences. These commonalities typically serve as a springboard for you and your student to begin a mentoring relationship.

The Trekkers model was built upon the principle that programs don’t change lives, relationships do. Following this philosophy, your main priority as a One to One mentor is to build a relationship with your student. We also ask that you:

The amount of time required to be a One to One mentor varies. Some students need support during a crisis while others could benefit greatly from a mentoring relationship for months and, possibly, years. Upon submitting an application, you will meet with a Trekkers staff member to discuss the best meeting times and frequency for your schedule.

In addition to the mentor pre-screening process, you will be required to attend a mentor training before partaking in the program. During this training you’ll learn mentoring basics, have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss your areas of strength and weakness. We also have resources for mentors such as common “Dos and Don’ts,” mentoring activities and more. Throughout your course as a One to One mentor, we would like you to update us frequently, voicing any concerns and asking pertinent questions.

As a One to One mentor, you will play a unique and vital role in your student’s life. Simply by being a supportive and caring presence, you may feel great personal satisfaction. Together with your student, you’ll have opportunities to explore different resources in your community and experience new things.

Many students in the community could use individual academic support during the school year. Like the One to One program, Trekkers views tutoring as an opportunity to provide students a safety-net of support beyond expeditions. You do not need previous tutoring or teaching experience to volunteer as a tutor.

Trekkers always matches each tutor and student together to suit the tutor’s academic strengths and the student’s needs. We want to ensure that whatever subject you tutor, you feel competent and confident in working with a student.

We ask that you:

The time and frequency of tutoring sessions vary from student to student. As a tutor, you will meet with a student during times that suit both your and the student’s schedules. Some tutors meet with students once or twice a week throughout the year. Others will tutor students until their grade improves – sometimes just a few weeks.

Although Trekkers does not offer a tutor training, after completing your application you will meet with a Trekkers staff person to review expectations, ask questions and discuss your availability. Before your first tutoring session, you also will attend a meeting with your student, your student’s parent(s) and a Trekkers staff member to break the ice and decide upon a session schedule. Throughout your time as a tutor, a Trekkers staff member will be available to support you and help you resolve any issues you might encounter.

While the benefits often vary from tutor to tutor, our tutors derive personal satisfaction from giving back to the community. As a tutor, you’ll build a special relationship with a student and gain experience in teaching and mentoring.

Trekkers often achieves our fundraising goals through hosting annual events that require many volunteers. Our current annual fundraising events include Trekkers 5K Run/Walk, July Fired Up event, Auctions and others.

As Trekkers continues to grow, we are seeking to expand our current annual fundraisers and develop more events in the future to support and enrich our core programming.

We are seeking volunteers to support every aspect of our fundraising events. “Getting the word out” before an event ensures the greatest community participation and largely contributes to that event’s success. Furthermore, our fundraising events require many helping hands during the events themselves. From pre-event promotion to flipping pancakes and post-event cleanup, there are opportunities for everyone! Specific areas in which we could use your support are:

Volunteers can contribute as little as an hour during an event to as much as 10 hours a week in the months prior to an event. We would welcome anything than you can give. Before you volunteer, you will meet with a Trekkers staff member to discuss your role and the corresponding dates and times of your volunteer position.

Each of Trekkers’ six classes participates in a different educational expedition within the continental United States every year. Our expedition mentors range in age from the late teens to mid-seventies, and while some have extensive experience in youth development or the outdoors, many do not. As Trekkers begins enrolling 7th graders from Rockland, South Thomaston, Thomaston, Cushing, Saint George and Owls Head, our need for expedition mentors will continue to grow.

The Trekkers model was built upon the principle that programs don’t change lives, relationships do. Following this philosophy, your main priority as an expedition mentor is to build relationships with students. During the expedition we ask that you:

The length of our overnight expeditions varies from 2 to 15 days. We also offer short day-trips throughout the year.

In addition to the mentor pre-screening process, we require all expedition mentors to attend a leadership training before heading out on an expedition. During this training, we will review expectations, safety procedures, mentoring basics and much more.

During the expedition itself, the Program Manager will hold nightly leadership meetings to debrief the successes and challenges of the day and support you in setting specific leadership goals for yourself.

A Volunteer Driver is anyone who transports meals and/or clients to and from planned events.  The driver who transports meals takes the meals from the food source to the patron’s home and may transport donated food from a local supermarket.

DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:

* Delivering nutritious meals to home bound seniors

* Act as a  safety “check-in” person for home bound seniors

* Reporting to Spectrum Generations if recipient does not answer their door

Portland Adult Education needs volunteers to assist English teachers with the lesson plan for multilingual learners in both online classes and in-person classes. Online classes use Google Classroom/Google Meet and volunteers should feel comfortable with that platform or other comparable ones. In-person aides would help with classes at the Portland Adult Education building on 14 Locust Street in Portland, ME.  Volunteer aides would help with group activities and in one on one situations in the physical classroom and in breakout rooms on Google Meet.  They might model dialogues or supervise reading groups following lesson plans created by the PAE teacher. MIRC has received a contract to provide 300+ culturally appropriate meals to asylum seeking families staying in a Saco hotel that is providing temporary transitional housing through May 2023. MIRC has hired a group of chefs from Congolese and Angolan communities to prepare meals that are familiar and culturally appropriate for these families Monday-Saturday in our commercial kitchen space at 63 Storer St., and is in critical need of volunteer support to help individually package these meals and transport them to the hotel which is about 5 minutes away by car. Having a vehicle will be important for this task, but is not absolutely necessary if at least one vehicle is shared among a group of volunteers. This is an excellent opportunity to take a hands-on role in supporting Maine's asylum seeking families as they seek permanent housing on their journey through the asylum process. Many of our wonderful folks have  life goals around creating Art.  We have had two very successful shows in the community but the pandemic meant  we lost our  ability to provide instruction. Art has been an integral part of MOBIUS, Inc. and with your help we can return it to a vital place again.

Volunteering Opportunities - EMMC - Northern Light Health

PURPOSE OF JOB: Provide essential customer service to visitors by welcoming them to the museum and processing their purchases.

RESPONSIBILITES:

The Rufus Porter Museum of Art and Ingenuity is open from mid-June to mid-October, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Shifts are in 3.25 hour increments (9:45 am to 1 pm, 1 pm to 4:15 pm) with two people scheduled for each shift (one as a Museum Docent/Tour Guide, the other as a Museum Store Volunteer). Last tour is at 3:30 pm.

Our "Let's go for a WALK"  program is designed to help get our rescue dogs out of the kennels for an hour, a few hours, or even a day trip. "Field Trips" or "Doggy Day Outs" as they are generally referred to throughout the animal welfare community are quickly becoming known as a great way for people who might not be able to have a pet to enjoy the benefits of pet ownership while doing something great for one of our rescues who are stuck in a kennel day in, day out.  Everyone benefits with our program, the dogs, the volunteers and of course the rescue, it's a win for everyone!

The priority is for the dogs that have been at the rescue for one month and longer, dogs that have recently arrived will not be eligible for the program.

Our program is open to members of the community who are 18 years or older, responsible and "preferably" have some experience with dogs. An application must be completed and an appointment scheduled to come and meet some of the dogs suitable for the program. Volunteers will need to spend time at the rescue in the play area with the dog they will be taking out with them, to build a relationship and allow the dog and person to feel comfortable, safe and happy with each other. We will only allow our dogs out when we are confident a good match is made.

We do not allow visits to dog parks, or homes and environments where there will be interaction with other pets. The focus is for the dog going on the walk, so that they can experience a great time, without more distractions and for information to be gathered on behavior, likes, dislikes, fun things and of course as many pictures as possible to help us to promote their adoption.

Only one dog per person is allowed, however, if two or more people have dog experience and the dogs get on with each other at the rescue, we would consider two dogs going out on the same trip! 

it is important to remember that we are always looking to find these precious saved souls their forever homes and the more exposure, the more information, pictures and video's we can provide, the higher chance they will have of finding their forever homes.

Do you love Halloween? We'd love to have you help us! We plan a HUGE event each year. We need volunteers to help with things like:

* building sets and set up

* working at the event, scaring people, selling tickets, helping with parking...

We also offer workshops throughout the year, actor workshops, make up, photo shoots and MORE!

Tutors would meet online (Zoom, Google Meet or another online platform) with the same ESOL student once a week for an hour to review and reinforce work that they do in their classes at Portland Adult Education. Tutors and students may also meet in-person at Portland Adult Education on 14 Locust Street at a mutually convenient time during the morning, afternoon, or evening. 

As a helpline volunteer, you’ll provide our core service—answering calls that come in to our 24-hour crisis helpline. No matter when someone calls, a helpline worker is there, ready to listen and to offer support and information about domestic abuse, safety planning, and our other services. Although it’s not easy, answering the helpline is one of the most rewarding jobs at Partners for Peace. You are the first contact someone affected by abuse has with our organization and often the first voice someone hears as they reach out for help. To provide helpline volunteers with the support, information, and practice they need, we require you to complete a mandatory training. This is a time commitment of about 45+ hours over eight weeks.

Partners for Peace is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of passionate community members who volunteer their time to provide organizational and financial oversight and serve as ambassadors for the organization. We are always looking for dedicated folks to serve on our Governing Board. This committee acts as our organizational board of directors, responsible for overall policy and direction of the organization. We also have several standing committees at our organization including a Finance Committee and Development & Engagement Committee. Volunteers can be invited to join these committees at Board or community members.

We are currently looking for volunteers who would like to help out with our office work, cleaning office and shelter spaces, and organizing donations. We often have a need for volunteers with trucks and the ability to transport furniture and large items help survivors of domestic violence move in and out of shelter and into permanent housing. We also sometimes need help transporting furniture donations to storage or to the homes of survivors. The amount of time required for this job is negotiable, so please contact us if you are interested.

At various times throughout the year (especially in October for Domestic Violence Action Month), we need people willing to help with special events or projects, distributing outreach materials and representing Partners for Peace in the community. This type of volunteering requires a 1.5 hour Ambassadors Training provided by Partners for Peace.

The HIAS Refugee Resettlement Program at the Jewish Community Alliance is looking for volunteers to help move furniture and household items into the homes of newly arrived families. 

Specific tasks include: Transporting, lifting and moving furniture from specified locations and delivering to designated apartments/houses with supervision. Must be able to life 40-50 lbs., and to carry furniture on staircases. A large vehicle to help transport items is appreciated but not required. 

This is a unique opportunity to engage directly with refugee clients and help welcome them into the local community by preparing their new home.

Beacon Hospice needs volunteers to provide companionship to terminally ill patients and their families. We need people from Woolwich to Ogunquit and out to the NH border. Spectrum Generations Waldo Community Center and MidCoast Regional Center for Volunteers for our Money Minders program. Days and Times are flexible. Through Money Minders, volunteers are matched with older adults who need help managing their finances.

Join our Kennebunk ReStore volunteer team. We are lucky to have a very dedicate group of volunteers who typically volunteer on a weekly basis. Volunteering with us is a great way to get involved in the community. We have also had many students and adults complete their community service hours with us.

The ReStore isn't only about heavy lifting! If you have lifting restrictions we still have plenty of opportunities. Interpreters are an essential part of Norlands’ educational programs. By touring Norlands, visitors gain a better understanding the Washburn family, their achievements, and life in rural Maine in the 1800s. The United Way Resource Development Committee is responsible for creating and implementing comprehensive development strategies that engage donors, businesses and foundations in fundraising. The committee is comprised of people with experience in resource and business development.

This committee meets on the last Tuesday of every month at 12 p.m.

Our Food Rescue Project partners with Hannaford Lewiston and Bates College and accepts leftover food that would otherwise be thrown away. Volunteers help out once a week, picking up donations and delivering them to the Center. Volunteers have the same day and pick-up every week, for example one volunteer is responsible for the Tuesday Bates pick-up every week. Direct Care Hospice Volunteers provide compassionate non-medical support to individuals who are living at end-of-life. This support may be in the form of companionship, doing light household chores, picking up and delivering groceries, running errands, meal preparation, shoveling snow, bedside vigil or other complementary care. Volunteers are asked to give from 1-3 hours per week of their time. Direct Care Hospice Volunteers must complete an application, a 24-hour training and a background check before starting to volunteer.

Bereavement Volunteers help to facilitate support groups for adults and children/youth who have lost a loved one. Adult support groups may address grief in general or may specialize in assisting parents who have lost a child or infant, adult children who have lost a parent, partner loss, holiday grief support, or loss due to suicide. In our special program, Hope's Place, volunteers can assist children and youth who have lost a significant person in their lives. Volunteers may facilitate weekly expressive art groups, run workshops, or assist with Camp Ray of Hope, a weekend retreat for children and their families. Bereavement volunteers typically give 1-3 hours per week of their time. They must also complete an application, 20 hour training, and background check before beginning to volunteer.

General Volunteers typically do not provide direct care to clients or the bereaved, but contribute to HVWA's mission in other important ways. This may be through volunteering at our resale shop, answering phones, organizing donations, and assisting with fundraisers or special events. General Volunteers typically give between 2-4 hours per week and require an 4 hour training.

We are a donation collection center in constant need of basic material needs.

We ask companies to donate hygiene and first aid items, clothing, and kitchenware.

Do you love to share history? Are you also friendly and outgoing? We might have the perfect volunteer position for you! Pejepscot History Center is looking for a greeter at our headquarters, 159 Park Row, Brunswick. Our headquarters houses the Pejepscot Museum--which has 2 galleries of rotating exhibits, a museum shop, and our extensive archival collection. As a museum greeter, you would be the first face visitors encounter and have a variety of tasks, ranging from selling historic house tour tickets for the Skolfield-Whittier House and Joshua L. Chamberlain House, providing information about the museum and local area, taking simple research questions, answering phones, and admin tasks. We're open Tuesday-Saturday and have morning and afternoon shifts available. Most of our volunteers work one shift per week (2-3 hours). Training and support are provided by a dedicated and friendly staff. Volunteering with PHC has many benefits including free historic house tours, a museum shop discount, and discounted or free admission to our many events. We have been hard at work planning safe arrangements that will allow us to have a full season (5/31-10/31) of historic house tours, programming, and operations. Volunteers are key to that success and we’re keen to continue growing our volunteer team. We are accepting applications of interest for volunteer docents at our historic house museums. Our docents love what they do, so giving back feels as much like giving to yourself! Expand your knowledge of history, meet people from around the country and the world, and share your enthusiasm for the people of the Greater Brunswick Maine community. We need docents for both house museums—the Victorian time capsule Skolfield-Whittier House and the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum, home of the Civil War hero. (Both houses have multiple stories and require climbing stairs.) Training will begin late spring, with a goal of having new docents in place at the end of May. Mayo Street Arts is a 501c3 non-profit and a vibrant haven for the arts located in East Bayside.

We are seeking volunteers to help us get the word out about our art, theater, and puppet events. This is an ongoing request for volunteers to help us put up event posters around our neighborhood and across Portland. 

MSA will provide a list of locations, and volunteers can choose to walk, bike, or drive to put up the event posters. Volunteers are welcome to poster on their own schedule.

Are you new to the Greater Bath area? Would you like to meet someone who knows the area well and would love to have you visit? We have many elderly people in the area that are still independent and living alone.  They are isolated because they cannot drive anymore or maybe they have family members who are unable to help. Many of their friends have passed away or cannot come to see them as often. They are lonely. We match a volunteer with one elderly person. The two of you can then make plans to just visit, take a walk, go shopping or to a medical appointment, or maybe just share a simple meal. The opportunity to do something they haven't been able to do in a long time is exciting to the senior and very rewarding to our volunteers! The SEARCH Program has seniors waiting for a volunteer in many towns in the Bath area, including all of Sagadahoc County. Bernard, Leonnelle and their child (girl - 1) live in Portland and are from Burkina Faso. Leonnelle is a nurse and Bernard is a project manager and they like walking, music and movies, shopping, cooking, learning English, and reading. They need legal help as well as assistance with finding an apartment and transportation. They speak French, Lingala, Moore, Portuguese and some English. 

What does mentoring look like? That’s up to you and the family. In less complicated times, we like our mentors to take a more hands-on approach to help mentees integrate into the community- such as including them in family outings & introducing them to the area. Currently, mentoring can be done while social distancing and some support can be provided remotely. Checking in regularly, sending along translated info regarding COVID-19, helping mentees locate resources- these are all things that can be done while maintaining safe distance if this is preferred by mentor and mentees. We still ask that anyone applying to mentor through WTS live local to the Portland area, so that you can begin an in-person relationship with your mentees once you feel safe doing so.  

Hancock County Habitat for Humanity provides safe affordable housing to families in need throughout Hancock County, building strong communities and adding stability where needed.

We are seeking a individual willing to offer 3-5 hours per week updating and maintain our social media platforms; posting updates, building followership, and spreading the word of our mission. The ideal person has a strong knowledge of social media platforms and love to share the wonderful story that come from our work. A strong belief in Habitat for Humanities mission is essential to creating the positive, uplifting social medial image for the organization.

LCHA has openings for docents at all three of our museums: the Pownalborough Court House in Dresden, the Old Jail in Wiscasset, and the Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta.

Museum Docents are crucial to our operations. They greet guests, sell museum tickets, and give museum tours. This opportunity is a great fit for people will a variety of skills and interests. A curiously about local history, building architecture, or community heritage and/or an interest in meeting new people will be helpful to the museum docent.

Training is provided and docents can choose volunteer shifts that fit their schedule.

Volunteer Advocates are always needed to help cover our 24-hour helpline.  Do your friends tell you that you are a very good listener?  Are you a compassionate and caring person with excellent personal boundaries? Our 44-hour crisis intervention training prepares our volunteers to take calls from people who are affected by domestic violence. These are people in our communities who might be directly affected as a victim, concerned about a family member, or a professional needing information on how to help the person they are working with. Volunteers usually take calls from the comfort of their own home and always have a staff member available to back them up.

Friendly visitors add so much to the lives of the residents and members at the Cedars. The goal of being a friendly visitor is to provide companionship to our residents and members. This may be done through reading, playing games, sharing stories, writing a letter or just conversing. The resident usually indicates how they would like this time to be spent. Our friendly visitors often assist residents by escorting or transporting to and from activities provided within our community. Traits of a friendly visitor here at The Cedars include: The ability to relate effectively, positively and compassionately with residents, members and staff. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Interest in getting to know residents personally. Ability to work with minimal supervision once tasks and responsibilities have been clearly defined.
