Volunteer: Center for Grieving Children - Creating Healing Communities - Intercultural Program

When children and teens who have experienced multiple losses rediscover themselves in a safe and peer-supported community, hope and resilience flourish.

Since 1997, the Center’s Intercultural Peer Support Program has collaborated with Portland Public Schools and others to serve children, teens, and their families, who have resettled locally from countries experiencing war, persecution, and natural disaster.

Above and beyond losses due to the death of loved ones, they also have experienced collective loss—a community-wide devastation that destroys a sense of place, belonging, safety, and group identity. The Intercultural Peer Support Program promotes healing and resilience in the face of complex traumatic stress and loss by increasing social, emotional, and coping skills; fostering a sense of belonging; and renewing hope. When children and teens experience the benefits of peer support, we see a relief of distress, improved sense of well-being, ability to enjoy rewarding friendships, and ability to complete tasks. These benefits contribute to school success.

YOU can make a difference in these children’s lives! It requires an open heart, completion of training, and a commitment of about 4 hours a week (groups meet weekday afternoons) from November through May. Please visit www.cgcmaine.org for more information about the Intercultural Peer Support Program. Register for one of our one-hour volunteer info session to learn more by contacting volunteer@cgcmaine.org.

Volunteer: Call for Board Members

Are you looking for a unique leadership opportunity? Have you been hoping to put your talent in the service of a progressive educational organization? Well, look no further! If you are committed to holistic, learner-driven and democratic education, we are looking for you! School Around Us (SAU) is currently recruiting for our board of directors.

School Around Us was founded in 1970 to embody the philosophy of holistic education — the insight that as learners we develop meaning, identity, and purpose through self discovery, relationships, connection to the environment, to our community, and to the spiritual dimension of life. For the last 50 years, SAU has pursued this vision as a small parent-run school for K - 8 students, guided by this mission and powered by the generosity and hard work of our parents, students, and teachers. Now, we are embracing an evolution in how we do this, out of a desire to re-vivify this deep-rooted educational vision in a way that meets today’s world of complex human, societal, technological and political forces. We’ve recently shifted away from our parent-run school model, hired a Director of Programs and have evolved to become a co-learning community that offers full-time, part-time and public programs to homeschooling families in Maine. As a part of this process, we are hoping to revamp our Board and recruit new members to support our first Director of Programs and aid in our continual evolution.

We are seeking a variety of experiences, skills, and perspectives, which could include:

Fundraising/Development Alumni Relations +  Engagement Nonprofit Governance (i.e. bylaws revision) Strategic Planning Finance/Accounting Legal Architect and landscaping professionals Thought leaders in Democratic/Holistic Education  Commitment to/interest in progressive education and/or co-learning communities Experience at School Around Us and/or commitment to its longevity

We are looking for people who will:

Attend monthly board meetings Potentially serve on one of our committees (currently in development) which may include: Alumni Relations, Development/Fundraising, Budget/Finance, Renovation, etc. Be able to make a 4-6 hour commitment monthly Advocate for our needs in the community and among your colleagues and peers   Make a personal, charitable contribution to SAU, to the best of their ability

Volunteer: “One to One” Mentor

Trekkers created the One to One Program for students who could benefit from one-on-one mentoring from caring adults within their community. Unlike our expedition-based programs, One to One provides the necessary infrastructure for you and a student to meet, connect and build a meaningful relationship by spending time together in the community.

Who will be my mentee?

We will match you and a student together based upon gender and shared interests and experiences. These commonalities typically serve as a springboard for you and your student to begin a mentoring relationship.

What is my role as a One to One mentor?

The Trekkers model was built upon the principle that programs don’t change lives, relationships do. Following this philosophy, your main priority as a One to One mentor is to build a relationship with your student. We also ask that you:

Be a positive role model. Consistently attend scheduled meetings. Relay progress, concerns and other relevant information to a Trekkers staff member and parent. How much time is required to be a One to One mentor?

The amount of time required to be a One to One mentor varies. Some students need support during a crisis while others could benefit greatly from a mentoring relationship for months and, possibly, years. Upon submitting an application, you will meet with a Trekkers staff member to discuss the best meeting times and frequency for your schedule.

What about mentor training?

In addition to the mentor pre-screening process, you will be required to attend a mentor training before partaking in the program. During this training you’ll learn mentoring basics, have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss your areas of strength and weakness. We also have resources for mentors such as common “Dos and Don’ts,” mentoring activities and more. Throughout your course as a One to One mentor, we would like you to update us frequently, voicing any concerns and asking pertinent questions.

What are the benefits of being a One to One mentor?

As a One to One mentor, you will play a unique and vital role in your student’s life. Simply by being a supportive and caring presence, you may feel great personal satisfaction. Together with your student, you’ll have opportunities to explore different resources in your community and experience new things.

What are my next steps?

If you’re interested in becoming a One to One mentor, you can:

Get an application. Download the Volunteer Application OR call the Trekkers office: (207) 594-5095 to request a mailed application. Submit your application. Mail the application to: Trekkers, 325 Old County Road, Rockland, ME 04841 OR you can return it to our office directly. Complete an interview. Trekkers interviews all first-time adult mentor applicants. Upon receiving your application, a Program Manager will contact you to schedule an in-person interview. During the interview you will have the chance to review your application and ask questions. Start changing a life! Before you know it, you’ll be building a relationship with a young person from your own community.

Volunteer: Tutor

Many students in the community could use individual academic support during the school year. Like the One to One program, Trekkers views tutoring as an opportunity to provide students a safety-net of support beyond expeditions. You do not need previous tutoring or teaching experience to volunteer as a tutor.

Do I choose what subject to tutor?

Trekkers always matches each tutor and student together to suit the tutor’s academic strengths and the student’s needs. We want to ensure that whatever subject you tutor, you feel competent and confident in working with a student.

What is my role as a tutor?

We ask that you:

Consistently attend scheduled meetings. Offer your student encouragement and positive feedback. Communicate with Trekkers staff and the student’s parents about progress, concerns and any other relevant information. How much time is required to be a tutor?

The time and frequency of tutoring sessions vary from student to student. As a tutor, you will meet with a student during times that suit both your and the student’s schedules. Some tutors meet with students once or twice a week throughout the year. Others will tutor students until their grade improves – sometimes just a few weeks.

What about tutor training?

Although Trekkers does not offer a tutor training, after completing your application you will meet with a Trekkers staff person to review expectations, ask questions and discuss your availability. Before your first tutoring session, you also will attend a meeting with your student, your student’s parent(s) and a Trekkers staff member to break the ice and decide upon a session schedule. Throughout your time as a tutor, a Trekkers staff member will be available to support you and help you resolve any issues you might encounter.

What are the personal benefits?

While the benefits often vary from tutor to tutor, our tutors derive personal satisfaction from giving back to the community. As a tutor, you’ll build a special relationship with a student and gain experience in teaching and mentoring.

What are my next steps?

Volunteer: Fundraising & Events Volunteer

Trekkers often achieves our fundraising goals through hosting annual events that require many volunteers. Our current annual fundraising events include Trekkers 5K Run/Walk, July Fired Up event, Auctions and others.

As Trekkers continues to grow, we are seeking to expand our current annual fundraisers and develop more events in the future to support and enrich our core programming.

Furthermore, our fundraising events require many helping hands during the events themselves. From pre-event promotion to flipping pancakes and post-event cleanup, there are opportunities for everyone! Specific areas in which we could use your support are:

Sitting on an event committee Marketing/promoting event Designing posters and flyers Submitting event information to newspapers, websites, radio broadcasts, etc. Recruiting volunteers Setup Hands on event support, i.e., flipping pancakes and greeting guests Post-event breakdown and cleanup How much time is required?

Volunteers can contribute as little as an hour during an event to as much as 10 hours a week in the months prior to an event. We would welcome anything than you can give. Before you volunteer, you will meet with a Trekkers staff member to discuss your role and the corresponding dates and times of your volunteer position.

Our expedition mentors range in age from the late teens to mid-seventies, and while some have extensive experience in youth development or the outdoors, many do not. As Trekkers begins enrolling 7th graders from Rockland, South Thomaston, Thomaston, Cushing, Saint George and Owls Head, our need for expedition mentors will continue to grow.

What is my role as an expedition mentor?

The Trekkers model was built upon the principle that programs don’t change lives, relationships do. Following this philosophy, your main priority as an expedition mentor is to build relationships with students. During the expedition we ask that you:

Be committed to building relationships with ALL participating students. Be a positive role model. Intentionally start conversations with all students. Embrace new experiences, landscapes, outdoor living and travel. Supervise students and facilitate positive team dynamics. Look for teachable moments to share your gifts and experiences with young people. How much time is required to be an expedition mentor?

The length of our overnight expeditions varies from 2 to 15 days. We also offer short day-trips throughout the year.

What about mentor training?

In addition to the mentor pre-screening process, we require all expedition mentors to attend a leadership training before heading out on an expedition. During this training, we will review expectations, safety procedures, mentoring basics and much more.

During the expedition itself, the Program Manager will hold nightly leadership meetings to debrief the successes and challenges of the day and support you in setting specific leadership goals for yourself.

What are the personal benefits?

These are some of the benefits of volunteering for a Trekkers expedition:

Creating connections among youth and other adults in your community Making a difference in a youth’s life Being introduced to new landscapes, cultures, natural resources and more Overcoming challenges that push you outside your comfort zone Being part of a team Giving back

And the relationships you’ll form will be as fun, engaging and powerful as the trip itself!

What are my next steps?

If you’re interested in becoming an expedition mentor, you can:

Get an application. Download the Volunteer Application OR call the Trekkers office: (207) 594-5095 to request a mailed application. Submit your application. Mail the application to: Trekkers, 325 Old County Road, Rockland, ME 04841 OR you can return it to our office directly. Complete an interview. Trekkers interviews all first-time adult mentor applicants. Upon receiving your application, a Program Manager will contact you to schedule an in-person interview. Start trekkin’! Before you know it, you’ll be riding one of the Trekkers buses, and alongside students and other mentors, heading into the journey of a lifetime!

Volunteer: Support for Saco Kitchen for Asylum Seeking Families

MIRC has received a contract to provide 300+ culturally appropriate meals to asylum seeking families staying in a Saco hotel that is providing temporary transitional housing through May 2023. MIRC has hired a group of chefs from Congolese and Angolan communities to prepare meals that are familiar and culturally appropriate for these families Monday-Saturday in our commercial kitchen space at 63 Storer St., and is in critical need of volunteer support to help individually package these meals and transport them to the hotel which is about 5 minutes away by car. Having a vehicle will be important for this task, but is not absolutely necessary if at least one vehicle is shared among a group of volunteers. This is an excellent opportunity to take a hands-on role in supporting Maine's asylum seeking families as they seek permanent housing on their journey through the asylum process. Culturally appropriate meals represent a crucial aspect of the support services they need. Please sign up here to support: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e4caeae22a6f5c16-mirc1#/

Volunteer: Teach an Art Class !

Many of our wonderful folks have  life goals around creating Art.  We have had two very successful shows in the community but the pandemic meant  we lost our  ability to provide instruction. Art has been an integral part of MOBIUS, Inc. and with your help we can return it to a vital place again.

Would you like to offer an hour or two to paint alongside and offer advice to our artists? Staff will transport and provide personal supports during this time, even hand over hand if needed.

This could be a one time thing which requires no  background checks,  just your talent and enthusiasm OR you could offer a series and Mobius would provide you with some simple training  and a background check to meet state requirements,

Volunteer: Let's go for a Walk - Dogg Day Out Program

Our "Let's go for a WALK"  program is designed to help get our rescue dogs out of the kennels for an hour, a few hours, or even a day trip. "Field Trips" or "Doggy Day Outs" as they are generally referred to throughout the animal welfare community are quickly becoming known as a great way for people who might not be able to have a pet to enjoy the benefits of pet ownership while doing something great for one of our rescues who are stuck in a kennel day in, day out.  Everyone benefits with our program, the dogs, the volunteers and of course the rescue, it's a win for everyone!

The priority is for the dogs that have been at the rescue for one month and longer, dogs that have recently arrived will not be eligible for the program.

Our program is open to members of the community who are 18 years or older, responsible and "preferably" have some experience with dogs. An application must be completed and an appointment scheduled to come and meet some of the dogs suitable for the program. Volunteers will need to spend time at the rescue in the play area with the dog they will be taking out with them, to build a relationship and allow the dog and person to feel comfortable, safe and happy with each other. We will only allow our dogs out when we are confident a good match is made.

Depending on time and availability an appointment might be scheduled for the volunteer to come back to pick up their new friend, or maybe they go out that same day. The dog will have a secure harness and collar, collar tag with rescue's information and be double leashed. This might sound like over-kill, but we are taking all precautions to ensure everyone stays safe. A seat belt attachment will be provided to keep everyone secure in the vehicle also. A crate can be available upon request prior to the day out. A collapsible water bowl, poop bags, an "Adopt Me" bandana, contact information and rescue business cards to hand out will also be provided in an easy carry, tote bag. Of course, there will be paperwork and waiver forms that need to be completed.

We do not allow visits to dog parks, or homes and environments where there will be interaction with other pets. The focus is for the dog going on the walk, so that they can experience a great time, without more distractions and for information to be gathered on behavior, likes, dislikes, fun things and of course as many pictures as possible to help us to promote their adoption.

Only one dog per person is allowed, however, if two or more people have dog experience and the dogs get on with each other at the rescue, we would consider two dogs going out on the same trip!

it is important to remember that we are always looking to find these precious saved souls their forever homes and the more exposure, the more information, pictures and video's we can provide, the higher chance they will have of finding their forever homes.

If you are interested in volunteering for our "Let's go for a WALK!" program, email "giveadogahome.maine@gmail.com" for more information and to complete relevant forms. Then of course, SPREAD the WORD!

Volunteer: Domestic Violence Helpline Volunteer

As a helpline volunteer, you’ll provide our core service—answering calls that come in to our 24-hour crisis helpline. No matter when someone calls, a helpline worker is there, ready to listen and to offer support and information about domestic abuse, safety planning, and our other services. Although it’s not easy, answering the helpline is one of the most rewarding jobs at Partners for Peace. You are the first contact someone affected by abuse has with our organization and often the first voice someone hears as they reach out for help. To provide helpline volunteers with the support, information, and practice they need, we require you to complete a mandatory training. This is a time commitment of about 45+ hours over eight weeks.
