Did you know Good Shepherd Food Bank has two distribution center locations? In addition to our flagship location in Auburn, the Food Bank also has a location in Hampden. Volunteer opportunities at the Hampden Distribution Center consists primarily of packing food boxes for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) works to improve the health of low-income people at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA commodity foods. We may also ask our volunteers to help with occasional/seasonal produce inspection.

Our Hampden location welcomes volunteers Tuesday-Thursday: 9am - 3pm and 1pm - 3pm, and Friday: 9am-11pm. We have a variety o roles to assist with our classes - from general help to being a culinary instructor. Serve as an educator and role model, teaching key skills and inspiring participants to cook more healthy, inexpensive meals at home.  

Responsibilities: Assist in the teaching of basic of food and kitchen safety, food preparation, and making healthy, low-cost choices and substitutions when cooking, according to the highlighted objectives of each lesson.  

Skills/Experience Required:  Professional culinary training or experience working in the food industry welcomed but not required. Self-taught culinary enthusiasts are also welcome! The Operations Support volunteer provides essential day-to-day support that helps the Christine B. Foundation’s small staff team effectively deliver programs and engage the community. This role supports office operations, volunteer coordination, program logistics, community outreach, and special projects.

As a community-led organization, CBF’s ability to serve cancer patients depends on a strong and well-supported volunteer workforce. This position helps create the organization, communication, and coordination needed for volunteers to contribute effectively and for CBF’s programs to operate smoothly.

CBF’s strength is its ability to turn community support into direct impact for people navigating cancer. While CBF is led by a small professional staff, its programs are powered by a robust network of volunteers who deliver food, support events, assist with programs, and contribute their time and expertise.

Operations Support adds capacity around CBF’s two staff leadership positions. Rather than expanding the organization through another traditional staff position, this role intentionally builds a strong volunteer layer that helps extend the reach of staff leadership. The person in this role will help keep volunteers connected, organized, and supported while also ensuring that the day-to-day office and operational needs of CBF are moving forward.

Lincoln County FISH is an all-volunteer organization that has been providing free rides to Lincoln County residents for medical appointments, shopping, and other purposes since 2015.  Driving for FISH is a unique one-on-one volunteer experience and we enthusiastically welcome new drivers.  Drivers use their own vehicles and pick the rides that they want to take from a list that is published daily.  You can drive as often or as infrequently as you like.  Secondary insurance is provided and mileage reimbursement is available.

The New England Electric Railway Historical Society, doing business as Seashore Trolley Museum, seeks passionate leaders to join our volunteer Board of Trustees. Seashore Trolley Museum collects, restores, exhibits and operates significant public transit vehicles and artifacts to preserve knowledge and resources for the education and enjoyment of future generations. We are the world's first and largest electric railway museum located in Kennebunkport, Maine, with a satellite museum in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Role Details
Commitment: 2–3 hours per month

Location: Our main campus is located in Kennebunkport, Maine. Scheduled meetings are hybrid; Trustees are encouraged to attend in-person if they can, but we always have an option to meet with Zoom.  Local Trustees assist our Executive Director with in-person donor stewardship and outreach when their time allows.

* Attend regular board meetings to vote on key choices. Board meetings are held on the third Saturday of every odd-numbered month from 10AM-1PM. Additional work and planning Zooms are held throughout the year scheduled around Trustees' availability. 
* Guide Seashore's long-term goals and budget plans.

* Share professional skills in areas like human resources, law, finance, construction, or marketing.

In the Volunteer Screener role, you may well be the first real Red Crosser a candidate gets to talk with, and they are eager. You’ll want to seek to understand what brought prospective volunteers to the Red Cross, their areas of interest, and what positions they would find most meaningful. Join the Home Fire Campaign and save lives by installing smoke alarms and educating residents about home fire risk!

Each year, the Red Cross responds to an average of more than 60,000 disasters, the vast majority of which are home fires. With our coalition partners, we are working to help reduce death and injuries from home fires. 

No prior experience necessary and all training is provided. Volunteer by appointment, so it’s always on your schedule. Depending on the local situation, work may be done virtually or in-person.

Perhaps the best protection against emergencies is education. The American Red Cross would much rather meet members of the community before a disaster than after. DISASTER AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FOR YOUTH
Save lives and prevent injury through The Pillowcase Project. The Pillowcase Project is a national youth preparedness program offered by Red Cross regions across the country. The 40- or 60-minute presentation provides emergency preparedness education to youth in grades 3-5 (ages 8-11) in school classrooms and other settings. Numerous tools have been developed for this program including a standardized curriculum, workbook, quizzes and activities which have been carefully constructed with the help of curriculum and hazard experts. Many tools for presenters have been developed to foster consistency and fidelity to the program goals and objectives. The highly interactive presentation addresses home fire safety, a local natural hazard, psycho-social coping skills and household preparedness steps like making a plan and a kit. Team Member roles include either being a presenter, presentation assistant, administrative support, or presenter trainer!

DISASTER AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FOR ADULTS
Be Red Cross Ready teaches people how to prepare for and respond to disasters likely to occur in their community. Participants in Hands Only CPR learn how to check for consciousness, call 911 (or the local emergency number) and give continuous chest compressions. Ready Rating helps businesses, schools, and organizations become better prepared for disasters and other emergencies. All of these are led by volunteer Presenters and Assistants.

Responsible to: Operations & Volunteer Management Coordinator

Description of Role: Make a positive difference in the lives of sexual assault survivors. Helpline advocates provide listening, support, and information over the phone to those impacted by sexual violence. Advocates also accompany survivors during medical forensic exams at local hospitals and if a survivor chooses to report to police. Advocates receive a stipend of $3/hour during helpline shifts, and a flat rate of $40 during accompaniments. Gas is reimbursed at $0.56/mile. Training is provided, and volunteer advocates will always have access to a staff member in case of questions or needing support.

Primary Responsibilities:

Respond to helpline callers with empathy and supportive listening

Respond in person to hospital and law enforcement accompaniments.

Secondary Responsibilities:

Complete Advocate Training, and engage in continuing education

Meet monthly for supervision with the Operations & Volunteer Management Coordinator

Log all helpline calls and accompaniments

Log all hours spent on the helpline and receiving supervision

Make mandated reports to CPS and APS when necessary

Skills/Qualifications Needed:

Driver’s License

Willing to complete background check, including fingerprinting

Comfortability around conversations about sexual violence

Time Commitment: Helpline advocates are expected to be on the helpline for two 12-hour shifts a month. Advocates are welcome to go about their lives as usual while on call, as long as they can respond to calls in a private location within 15 minutes. Volunteers choose their own shifts.

The Community Café Assistant assists the Community Café Coordinator in the café operation including food service, administrative requirements and program activities (Greeter, Administrative support, Kitchen Aide/Helper, Server, Dishwasher, Set-up/Clean-up).  Café schedule is Thursdays for approximately 3-4 hours (between the hours of 9:30am - 2pm).

Right now we need volunteers on Mondays and Wednesdays to pack and deliver meals throughout Northern Penobscot county. Along with delivering the meals, our drivers are a friendly face and regular check-in for the people we serve!

The Delivery Driver is responsible for picking up items in Brewer and delivering and/or transporting meals to patron homes or other specified locations.  The Meals on Wheels Delivery Driver volunteer will pick up meals at the Durgin Center in Brewer and deliver to consumer homes.  Specifics routes and days needed are:

Weekly - Newport - Mondays, 3.5 hours needed, deliver to 8-10 consumers 

Weekly - Bangor - Tuesdays, 2.5 hours needed, deliver to 8-12 consumers

Weekly - Kenduskeag - Wednesdays, 3.5 hours needed, deliver to 5-7 consumers

Weekly - Greenbush - Wednesdays, 2 hours needed, deliver to 5-10 consumers

A Scholarship Mentor will take a ProsperityME PROSPER Scholarship student under their wing. The goal is to help students adjust to college life in America and to prepare for a career in their field of study. Mentors will be matched with compatible students majoring in the mentor’s professional field. The mentor will act as a “big brother or sister” figure, friend, and guide. Mentors may help students select courses, provide general advice, and help students develop a résumé and professional network that will position the student to be hired by a Maine employer upon graduation.

The Ronald McDonald House provides a comfortable, safe, free place for families to stay while their children are in the hospital or receiving treatment locally. 

We are looking for volunteers who can provide house coverage for occasional or regular shifts from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday (and Sundays from 5:00 to 9:00 pm).

Volunteers help keep this "home away from home" running strong! Volunteers assist with checking families in and out of the house, providing front desk coverage, helping with administrative tasks, as well as some light cleaning, such as emptying the dishwasher and disinfecting counters and tables in the kitchen.

The Alfond Youth & Community Center (AYCC) is often in need of youth sports coaches for both recreational sports and team sports. Share your love and passion for sport! You will teach sport-specific skills, mental toughness, good sportsmanship, and ultimately how to compete in a positive and productive way. Prior experience is not needed, we will provide you with coaching instructions.

Our youth sports rotate out every 8 weeks. We have football, flag football, softball, baseball, basketball, cheer, and more.

Be a mentor to youth ages 5-12 in the afterschool programs at the Alfond Youth & Community Center, Lawrence Primary, and Atwood Primary schools. Mentors have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on a youth and to become a part of their support system. 

Volunteers will meet with youth once a week for an hour. The schedule is flexible. Mentoring occurs during the time of 3-530pm, Monday - Friday, during the school year. Heart of Maine United Way teams up with primary care doctors in Piscataquis, Hancock, Waldo, and Washington Counties to deliver Bundle boxes for every baby aged 0-12 months they see. Each box is filled with age-appropriate toys, books, and a little treat for parents. Join us in assembling these boxes—we offer monthly opportunities to work as a team or meet new people while packing these adorable boxes with goodies.

Volunteers make a difference in the lives of the families that come through our doors by hosting, listening and by simply being there.

Weekend Coverage Volunteers manage the daily operations at the Ronald McDonald House. Volunteers may cover a few hours, a full day or an overnight shift. Overnight volunteers have a private room and bathroom, and overnight shifts include sleep time (volunteers respond to emergencies overnight as needed). 

Volunteers chose which weekends or shifts they cover and whether they are able to cover a few hours, an overnight shift, or more. This is a great opportunity for families to volunteer together!

Responsibilities include orienting families with House services, assisting families checking in and out of the house, daily household cleaning and upkeep, front desk coverage and preparing guest rooms for new families.

Orientation and training are provided and required. A staff member is always available on call for support.

FairTide Thrift Store is looking for volunteers to help sort through donations! The thrift store provides low-cost clothing and housewares to the community while raising critical funds for our Housing and Case Management Program.

Gleaning is the practice of harvesting unsalable crops from farmers' land and redistributing them so they do not go to waste. Either these crops are "seconds" and have minor flaws, or there is no market for the amount of crops grown. Once harvested, the produce is typically brought to food pantries and programs for use. It is a win/win situation, in which the food waste is reduced and healthy, fresh, local produce is available to more Mainers.

We need volunteers for harvesting, transporting, and preserving the crops, as well as for food security publicity events throughout the year. Volunteer Treasurer

The Falmouth Historical Society is seeking a volunteer Treasurer/Board Member with nonprofit experience. Roles include Treasurer/Bookkeeper to prepare monthly reports for the Board meeting, preparing the annual budget and all government/tax/nonprofit filings. Bookkeeping includes keeping ledgers up to date, processing bills, payments, deposits, donations, merchandise sales, dues and grants. Candidate should be proficient in Quickbooks Online. Knowledge of Wild Apricot/nonprofit member management software - or the willingness to learn the software, is necessary. All banking is done online and the Treasurer’s job can be done remotely. In-person meetings would be as needed. The tasks require about 8 hours per month, with additional hours for end-of-year filings. We are a small non-profit with a friendly, collegial working environment. The current Assistant Treasurer would continue in that role.

An electric piano is available on site, and the music would begin around 4:45 pm and last approximately one hour. Information Desk volunteer creates a welcoming and helpful environment for all guests of St. Joseph Healthcare. Volunteers in this role fill various needs including, welcoming the public, communicating with the care team, helping patients navigate the waiting area and building complex. The ideal volunteer will have a neat appearance, excellent interpersonal skills, and a desire to interact with the public. The ability to traverse the building is necessary.

We need your help to keep great books accessible to communities 24/7. Visit Little Free Libraries in your community to distribute books! 

We can suggest where to look for free or inexpensive books, or if you already have some, you can share those too. You can find book-sharing boxes near you using our world map or free mobile app. Volunteers over 18 anywhere in the U.S. where there are Little Free Libraries can register for this opportunity.

FVP offers a free training (the Core Advocacy, Intervention, Response and Ethics Training) to help prepare you for this role; also, a staff person will be available to assist you by phone while you are volunteering. Throughout the training, participants will learn about the complex issue of domestic violence, the services of Family Violence Project, and how to talk with callers and help them create safety plans. Although successful completion of the training is required for this volunteer role, no other experience is necessary.

Once the training is successfully completed, and after a brief orientation period, volunteers will take helpline calls from home with support available by phone. Most volunteers contribute 15 hours per month by covering one overnight helpline shift.

The next 45-hour volunteer training will be held in Fall 2026. While the training dates have not yet been scheduled, we anticipate a mid or late October start date and plan to offer the training as a live-participation, online training. If you are interested in participating in this opportunity, you must be 18 years of age or older, complete a volunteer interview prior to being accepted to the training, and pass background checks (including fingerprinting) prior to volunteering. While the training itself is free of charge, we ask for a $25 donation (to help cover the cost of background checks) from those who are financially able to provide it; the inability to donate will not prevent a person from participating!

The Christine B Foundation is a service-providing nonprofit striving to support those facing cancer by extending access to healthy food, nutritional information, and community connections essential to their strength and comfort. 

The Cancer Nutrition Services through CBF include hospital produce pick up, oncology dietitian counseling, and home-delivered medically tailored groceries for patients with cancer, recent survivors, and their families. 

This program supports over 1,500 Mainers every year across the state now having provided over 700,000 equivalent meals.

Thanks to 100+ volunteers working in various parts of this effort, CBF remains committed to keep this service at no cost to recipients. 

Home Delivery Driver – Volunteer Opportunity (Starting January)

The Christine B. Foundation (CBF) is recruiting Home Delivery Driver Volunteers to support our medically tailored grocery program for patients with cancer. We are piloting an expansion of services in Cumberland and York counties and aim to recruit and onboard 6+ volunteers as new referrals come in.

Home Delivery Drivers meet CBF staff at a designated pickup site in Portland, retrieve pre-assembled grocery packages tailored to each patient’s medical needs and preferences, and deliver them directly to patients’ homes in Southern Maine. This is a patient-facing role that typically requires 1–2 hours every other week. Delivery windows are generally Wednesday or Thursday afternoons, depending on volunteer and patient availability.

Pick up assigned, pre-assembled grocery packages from the Portland site.

Deliver nutrition packages to patient homes in Cumberland or York County.

Provide a compassionate, professional experience at drop-off.

Uphold HIPAA and CBF privacy policies.

Strong interpersonal and active listening skills.

Reliable transportation.

Successful background check.

Up-to-date flu vaccination.

Ability to commit to 1–2 hours every other week.

Volunteers are eligible for gas reimbursement at $0.25 per mile.

Junior Achievement (JA) is seeking friendly and motivated volunteers (from all occupations) to facilitate pre-planned programs on entrepreneurship, work readiness, and financial literacy to Maine students. Volunteers lead five 45-minute sessions at their convenience over the course of a semester. Classes are taught during school hours and provide a unique chance to work with the same class for several weeks.

Make-A-Wish Maine's mission: Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Our vision is to reach every eligible child in the state of Maine. With our office being located in Scarborough, we rely on Wish Granters all over the state of Maine to be able to connect to families.

A Wish Granter volunteer meets with the wish child and family members to help identify the child’s wish ideas while brainstorming and planning special enhancements throughout the wish process. Wish granters work in teams of two alongside Make-A-Wish staff to ensure every eligible child’s wish comes true.

United Way of Kennebec Valley seeks volunteers to help prepare and serve lunch to students after they have completed Day of Caring.

UWKV partners with 26 local schools and many area businesses to sponsor student Days of Caring. This annual event, held on a different day at each school or district, matches student volunteers with work projects at local sites in Kennebec County.

NOTE: We ask that if someone commits to the 'Event Date' that they also commit to the 'Rain Date' just in case we need to use it.

You can make a huge difference in the lives of people living outside on the streets of Bangor and give people warm clothes.

We urgently need volunteers to organize donated clothing then give out clothing. We only give clothing to people inside our shelter.

We receive many generous donations of clothing and items. Volunteers un-bag the clothing, sort it, and hang it up.

We welcome volunteers who need community service hours for either school or court.

In the Volunteer Screener role, you may well be the first real Red Crosser a candidate gets to talk with, and they are eager. You’ll want to seek to understand what brought prospective volunteers to the Red Cross, their areas of interest, and what positions they would find most meaningful. You’ll use your understanding from talking with the volunteer candidates to match expressed interest with the needs of the organization. Therefore, you’ll be connecting new recruits with positions for which they are both interested, well-suited, and needed.  Then you will update their status in our volunteer management system.

You can do this role remotely from your living room in Northern New England or, if you prefer, from an NNE Red Cross office near you. You’ll want to have 4 – 8 hours a week available for this role.

It’s 3am and a family of five has just lost their home and everything in it to a fire. They’re devastated, scared uncertain, and…homeless. You’re called and drive to the scene. You’re able to offer a reassuring smile and a calming voice. Within the hour you have located a temporary place for them to stay, a way to eat, and some clothing to wear. You have helped them to be warm, safe, and comfortable for the night. You’ve calmed them and set up follow-up services for the next day. Ultimately, you have offered them hope when they need it most. You are a Red Cross Disaster Responder.

A hurricane is threatening the East Coast and heading straight for Portland. You are a part of a team that moves supplies to a local gymnasium. Cots are set up. Meals are on their way. Everything is in place. Authorities are evacuating homes closest to the ocean and directing those people to your shelter location. You’re ready for them. You are a Red Cross Disaster Volunteer.

This is why we offer free programs for different ages and organizations led by Volunteer Instructors, Presenters, and Assistants. This is your opportunity to share your knowledge, to flex your teaching abilities, and to use your communications skills, all while doing your part to save lives and property. All training provided; only sign up for shifts and sessions that fit your schedule!

DISASTER AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FOR YOUTH
Save lives and prevent injury through The Pillowcase Project. The Pillowcase Project is a national youth preparedness program offered by Red Cross regions across the country. The 40- or 60-minute presentation provides emergency preparedness education to youth in grades 3-5 (ages 8-11) in school classrooms and other settings. Numerous tools have been developed for this program including a standardized curriculum, workbook, quizzes and activities which have been carefully constructed with the help of curriculum and hazard experts. Many tools for presenters have been developed to foster consistency and fidelity to the program goals and objectives. The highly interactive presentation addresses home fire safety, a local natural hazard, psycho-social coping skills and household preparedness steps like making a plan and a kit. Team Member roles include either being a presenter, presentation assistant, administrative support, or presenter trainer!

DISASTER AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FOR ADULTS
Be Red Cross Ready teaches people how to prepare for and respond to disasters likely to occur in their community. Participants in Hands Only CPR learn how to check for consciousness, call 911 (or the local emergency number) and give continuous chest compressions. Ready Rating helps businesses, schools, and organizations become better prepared for disasters and other emergencies. All of these are led by volunteer Presenters and Assistants.
