Responsible for receiving donations of only clothing and shoes that are reasonably clean.

Kindly refusing items other than clothing and shoes or things that smell bad or are obviously dirty.

Reminding people that we have limited space, no washers or dryers and need to provide decent clothing items to those in need.

Giving people information about other service organizations in the community that take donations that we cannot receive.

Taking all appropriate donations downstairs to the sorting room.

Greeting patrons and letting them know where they need to go to either wait for their turn to be registered or go to be registered.

On Day 3 (on Wednesdays) all the clothing racks, dressing room and drawers will need to be put away. The fellowship hall will need to be vacuumed. Then tables and chairs will need to be set up in the hall for future activities in the building. 

Responsible for sorting donations. First, deciding if the clothing is reasonably clean, presentable, complete and uplifting. Current seasonal clothing needs to be labeled by size and hung on the clothing racks for patrons. Not current seasonal clothing needs to be neatly packed up and labeled by category. Toward the end of each shift or day the sorting area should be straightened and left neat. All clothing that is not going to be kept for patrons should be bagged up and put in the “Go Away” bin. Non- clothing items should be bagged or boxed up and labeled for Goodwill. Trash needs to be taken to the dumpster.

Come in on Day 1 (Monday at 11:45am, Currently, Wednesdays at 10am) an hour before opening to move and arrange the women’s clothing racks, dressing room, men’s clothing room and children’s clothing room for volunteers & patrons to access. A couple tables and chairs will need to be set up upstairs and down.

Responsible for giving new patrons a tour of the clothing closet. Helping them find specific items or making requests. Checking out patrons: including recording count of items received & bagging items.

Responsible for greeting all patrons kindly and respectfully. If they have been referred, asking for their referral form or matching them up with a form emailed to LSCC. Asking about their needs and getting statistical data entered into our database. Sharing the patron guidelines with them in the language they are comfortable with. Referring patrons to other available resources in the community if needed.

Become a Hospice of Southern Maine Volunteer!  Hospice of Southern Maine provides a comprehensive training program and ongoing support to volunteers working with our patients and their families. The initial training ensures that volunteers have the skills and confidence to be well prepared for this role. No health care background is needed. Volunteers complete the professional circle of hospice care. In addition to being good listeners, our volunteers are compassionate, reliable, and non-judgmental. They enjoy working with all types of people.  Direct Care Volunteers provide non-medical aid and support in the following ways: Providing companionship and emotional support for patients, caregivers and families, by providing respite care to allow caregivers time to themselves, by assisting with errands, helping with light household chores or light meal prep, by providing bedside companionship for patients alone in their final hours and offering grief support following the death of a loved one.

Looking for a new volunteer opportunity to spark joy in your life? Seashore Trolley Museum seeks new recruits from the community who want to learn a unique, new skill and help the Museum provide an awesome experience for guests this season by becoming volunteer trolley Conductors and Operators!

Seashore Trolley Museum's trolleys are the real deal; they operate on an electric railway and are the real trolleys from the late 1800s-early 1900s (and some cities like Boston, El Paso, New Orleans, etc. still operate trolleys and/or light rail vehicles today!).  These are different than the tourist trolleys (which are really buses designed to look like our real trolleys for nostalgia) that are out in the summers and are operated by for-profits with paid bus drivers. 

Volunteers will learn how to be a Conductor first. During the training classes, new volunteers will be trained by a pair of Seashore Instructors. Topics will include the ins and outs of the information shared with guests about the museum’s history and the robust transit collection, how to safely board guests on the trolleys, how the railroad works and is operated (rules), and the duties of being a Conductor. Additional experience will be gained by working with experienced Conductors. When ready, the students will be qualified as Seashore Conductors who will be able to work in revenue service, paired with a qualified Operator who will operate the car. The next step will be to complete further instruction with a Seashore Instructor on operating the car.

The Museum is holding their next  training courses in August. To be eligible, volunteers must become members of the Museum, be 18 years old by the conclusion of the course, and must hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license from any U.S. state.

Keeping this building in good condition so that all may enjoy is rewarding work - and it takes a village! Volunteers can help with a wide range of projects, depending on their skills and availability. We regularly need help with: taming the willow dome, gallery wall prep and painting, cleaning and organizing, maintaining the grounds (a terrific opportunity for groups wanting to volunteer together) and garden beds, sign painting, kiln repair, light construction/carpentry, and more.

Help us to update and maintain our burgeoning Art Library. Tasks include cataloging, labelling, and shelving books, as well as special projects.

Tuesday – Saturday, 3 hr minimum shift between 10am-8pm, consistent every week (minimum 2 month commitment)

Individuals with sufficient experience in printmaking, ceramics, or darkroom photography can qualify to be a studio monitor. Waterfall Arts strives to offer reliable open studio hours that the public can count on to create work in our spaces, so we’re looking for volunteers that can make a consistent weekly commitment. Duties include opening the space and overseeing renters, providing help when needed, maintaining the studio space, and offering basic orientation (rules, supply location, and equipment processes) to new users.

Studio Monitors may use their scheduled sessions to pursue their own art practices.

Waterfall Arts has been steadily expanding its offerings, and we aim to grow a lot more in the near future! Programming support volunteers help us to create and implement our class/event/exhibition schedules. Duties include: attending committee planning meetings, helping to connect with artists for exhibitions and educators for classes, managing instructor contracts, locating and allocating resources, participating in marketing and community outreach, and assisting with event organization, artwork intake/inventory, and class/workshop needs.

The Gallery Greeter is one of our main liaisons with the public. You'll be educated about the current exhibition and our on-going programs so that you can effectively answer questions and provide general information to our visitors. Duties include: Welcoming guests as they arrive, directing visitors to the office or to tenants’ studios; answering the phone and recording messages for staff; providing information about studio and room rentals and classes; answering questions about membership.

As the first point of contact for visitors, the Front Desk Attendant plays a key role in creating a positive and engaging museum experience. When Will I Volunteer?

Adult volunteers play an important role in the 4-H program. They mentor 4-H youth, coordinate local community clubs, teach in 4-H school groups and help to plan and run events. Types of Volunteers Needed:

4-H Club Leader: Work in partnership with youth ages 5-18 to develop citizenship, leadership, and life skills. Whether you want to oversee a general club or a focus on a specific topic, you'll help young people learn the importance of record keeping, public speaking, and service learning, while learning new skills and having fun.

4-H Project Leader: Share your skills, talents or special interests such as photography, horses, dogs, rabbits, sewing, computers or woodworking. In this role, you may be called upon to offer a number of sessions at an afterschool program, or assist a club leader by sharing your expertise and working with their club members.

4-H Special Interest Club Leader: Special Interest (SPIN) clubs are generally 6 sessions held on a topic of the volunteer’s choosing. Some SPIN clubs we have offered in the past include Introduction to Horses, Cake Decorating, Bees and Beyond, and more.

Episodic 4-H Volunteer: We have a variety of volunteer opportunities that don't require a long-term commitment. Judging at the fair, helping with a specific fundraiser, assisting with a garden project, scoring 4-H project records, or organizing an annual county event to name a few.

The Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) is looking for compassionate, reliable volunteers to join our Respite Care Companion pilot program. You’ll be matched one-on-one with an older adult who needs support living independently—and provide their family caregiver with a much-needed break.

This is more than volunteering—it’s a chance to build a meaningful relationship, share stories and smiles, and help someone feel seen, supported, and less alone.

During weekly visits, you’ll provide companionship and light, non-medical assistance to an older adult in their home. Activities may include:

Junior Achievement (JA) is seeking friendly and motivated volunteers (from all occupations) to facilitate pre-planned programs on entrepreneurship, work readiness, and financial literacy to Maine students. Volunteers lead five 45-minute sessions at their convenience over the course of a semester. Classes are taught during school hours and provide a unique chance to work with the same class for several weeks.

What skills do I need to be a Phone Pal volunteer?
Volunteers must be able to develop a sense of trust and rapport; sensitivity toward older adults and persons with disabilities and/or dementia; active listening skills; access to reliable phone service. Volunteers communicate concerns to the Phone Pal Coordinator as needed and follow protocol if recipient does not answer phone at the scheduled time.

Where & when will I make my calls?
Phone Pals call their match 1-3 times/week for about 10-30 minutes each time - the days and times of the calls are flexible!  Whatever works best for you and your Phone Pal match!  Make calls from your home, office - or anywhere!  To build relationships, we ask for a commitment of at least 6 months.

Do you have a passion for technology and helping others? Are you looking for a way to apply your experience working with Zoom and other virtual platforms?  You might be a great fit for the Safety Observer Volunteer role with Southern Maine Agency on Aging's Agewell programs!

Agewell offers two health and wellness classes for seniors: Tai Chi for Health & Balance and A Matter of Balance.  Both are evidence-based to reduce the risk of falls among older adult participants.  When we lead these classes virtually, we are able to reach many of our older neighbors who face barriers to in-person classes such as transportation availability and cost, caregiving duties, and even Maine's winter weather!  However, virtual classes bring a host of challenges as participants learn the platform (Zoom) and we ensure safe practice remotely. 

The Agewell Safety Observer Volunteer will track attendance, monitor class both visually and auditorily, and admit virtual participants from the waiting room to the class. The Safety Observer supports participants with technical questions to the best of their ability, and acts as the conduit between the participants and the class instructor—asking (but not providing) for modifications or clarifications as needed and providing feedback to the instructor about technical issues.

Southern Maine Agency on Aging is teaming up with Hospice of Southern Maine to recruit Hospice Volunteers!  Hospice of Southern Maine believes in doing everything we can to provide the highest quality of care for our patients. Striving to help each patient reach their goals at end of life, we work together to create an individualized plan of care with each of our patients. That includes support from family caregivers, loved ones, and our interdisciplinary team of clinicians...and volunteers!  Join our team and make a meaningful impact in the lives of patients and their loved ones.

As a Direct Care Hospice Volunteer, you will provide essential support to patients and their families in various settings, including private homes, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities. Your involvement will be invaluable in ensuring that our patients receive the care and comfort they deserve.

Direct Care Hospice Volunteers provide non-medical aid and support in the following ways:
-Providing companionship and emotional support for patients, caregivers, and families
-Providing respite care to allow caregivers time to themselves
-Assisting with errands
-Helping with light household chores or light meal prep
-Providing bedside companionship for patients alone in their final hours
-Assisting with life review, letter writing, or completion of projects
-Offering grief support following the death of a loved one
-Providing therapy dog (PawPrints), music (Heartstrings Program), or Reiki visits - share your skills!
-Kitchen support at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House

Training & Requirements:
-Completion of application packet
-Completion of the 30-hour Hospice Volunteer Training: Trainings are held annually in April, June, and September. Some sessions will be held virtually over Zoom while others will take place in person at our main office in Scarborough.
-Favorable background check
-Substance use testing with a negative result
-Mandatory TB Screening and immunization documentation
-CDC required immunizations
-Volunteers must complete all annual requirements
-Must be at least 18 years of age

Commitment & Schedule:
-A minimum commitment of 3-4 hours per week, for a minimum of 1 year

Southern Maine Agency on Aging has partnered with WindowDressers to fill a number of volunteer needs:

1. Measuring Volunteer: Measuring Volunteers work in teams of two visiting clients at home to conduct a measurement appointment. Volunteers will take measurements for installing window inserts and quote the client on the price of the install. At least one volunteer will be required to have access to a vehicle as well as a valid driver's license. Volunteers will be paired based on geographic proximity to clients and may choose to carpool to the client's home or drive separately. Access to a laptop and experience working with basic computer programs is a plus. 

2. Local Coordinator: Community Builds are like old-fashioned barn-raisings for inserts! Volunteers gather together for several days to build all of the inserts that have been ordered in their neighborhood.  Experienced volunteers teach new volunteers, food is provided, and the end results are high-quality inserts at a very affordable price and a stronger, more connected community. Community Builds typically take place between September and January each year. Local Coordinators are key volunteers who help anchor a Community Build in their neighborhood—organizing the event from start to finish.  The Local Coordinator helps recruit and organize a team of 4-10 volunteers to help run the event.  They also work to secure a donated location for the Community Build, schedule the event, and oversee the event coordination. With a strong volunteer team, this is mostly a management role.

3. Food Coordinator: Providing food is an important community-building aspect of each Community Build. A Food Coordinator is a key team member for each Community Build; they help secure food donations, and are responsible for the set-up and clean-up of the food for each day of the Community Build.

What skills do I need to be a Phone Pal volunteer?
Volunteers must be able to develop a sense of trust and rapport; sensitivity toward older adults and persons with disabilities and/or dementia; active listening skills; access to reliable phone service. Volunteers communicate concerns to the Phone Pal Coordinator as needed and follow protocol if recipient does not answer phone at the scheduled time.

Where & when will I make my calls?
Phone Pals call their match 1-3 times/week for about 10-30 minutes each time - the days and times of the calls are flexible!  Whatever works best for you and your Phone Pal match!  Make calls from your home, office - or anywhere!  To build relationships, we ask for a commitment of at least 6 months.

Paw Prints Pet Therapy Program:
Volunteers provide patients, families and HSM staff the opportunity to visit and interact with Therapy Dogs and experience the benefits of the human-animal bond and improve quality of life through human-animal interaction. Paw Prints volunteers work directly with the Gosnell House patient’s, families, and facility residents offering comfort and support through pet visitation.

Heart Strings Music Program:
Musicians who are trained hospice volunteers will play live music at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. Musicians are not there to be performers but rather to provide a soothing presence. The musician stays out of the way and in the background. Conversations, meals, visits or rests are able to continue. Musicians will play in the family room/lobby area and will play bed side upon request.

Reiki Volunteering
To provide Reiki sessions voluntarily to hospice patients and/or caregivers who request the service. Reiki volunteer will provide two to four hours or more a month of Reiki to hospice patients requesting the service.

The Southern Maine Agency on Aging has partnered with York County Community Action Corporation (YCCAC) to recruit Volunteer Drivers! Did you know that transportation is among one of the most requested services by older adults in Southern Maine?  Volunteer Drivers provide critical door-to-door transportation services for individuals who are unable to access other means of transportation, including children and elderly residents of York County.

What will I do as a Volunteer Driver?
-Drive your own vehicle to provide transportation for individuals across York County and beyond.
-Provide door-to-door services to clients traveling to medical appointments and other essential services.
-Transport residents from any of the 29 towns in York County to services in and out of the County, as far south as Boston and as far north as Bangor, although the majority of the transportation requests are for appointments within York County and Southern Cumberland County (Scarborough/Portland).

Who Were Looking For:
-Dependable and caring individuals with a valid Maine driver’s license and a good driving record.
-Volunteers who are interested in becoming an active part of their community and helping others.
-A minimum commitment of 4-6 months is preferred

When Will I Volunteer?
-Volunteer hours are flexible based on your availability.
-Transportation requests are typically from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, 5-7 days a week.
-You can choose your schedule based on when you’re available to drive.

As a volunteer in Maine Health's Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP), you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of patients of the age of 70.  You'll help them maintain their dignity, health, and well-being. Whether you're helping patients stay active, engaged, or simply offering a comforting presence, your contribution will help improve their hospital experience.

Volunteer Role Highlights:

You will actively support older patients in various ways, including:

-Daily Visitor: Offer orientation, communication, and social support.

What skills do I need to be a Phone Pal volunteer?

Volunteers communicate concerns to the Phone Pal Coordinator as needed and follow protocol if recipient does not answer phone at the scheduled time.

Where & when will I make my calls?
Phone Pals call their match 1-3 times/week for about 10-30 minutes each time - the days and times of the calls are flexible!  Whatever works best for you and your Phone Pal match!  Make calls from your home, office - or anywhere!  To build relationships, we ask for a commitment of at least 6 months.

Our Volunteers serve at the Visitor Information Center on Portland's beautiful waterfront, the hub for travelers searching for local tours, restaurants, attractions, and where to stay. It is well-stocked with brochures, Visitor’s Guides, maps of the region, and plenty of pro-tips and recommendations to help make the most of visitor’s stay in Greater Portland

The volunteer schedule is very flexible, weekly and bi-weekly, a set day or on-call.  We appreciate a 6 month commitment but exceptions can be made for part-year residents.

Seeking a volunteer to assist residents with hanging their pictures.  Hammer, picture hardware, level, and tape measure are all provided, so know-how and a friendly smile are all you need to bring with you for this unique service provided within their home.  

Scheduled days and timeframes negotiable based on volunteer availability during normal business hours. Anticipate a bi-weekly schedule will fit current need; open to adjusting as demand and volunteer preference changes. 

Ability to lift materials to be hung required for independence in this support role. Typically, up to 5 lbs. for framed pictures, clocks, etc. 

The Trail Inspection Team will work closely with Hirundo Wildlife Refuge in Old Town, ME, to monitor and report trail damage/repairs to our Trail Keeper, Howard Corbett during the winter season (December 2024 – April 2025). After each snowstorm, volunteers will walk the trail they have selected and either correct and/or report major/minor damage to Howard. Anyone is welcome to participate in this program, but the ability to handle cold, snowy/icy conditions, and wear proper winter gear is required.

Minimum age for this opportunity is 16.

     CERT is a volunteer group dedicated to assisting others during emergencies. Through preparedness, education, training, and response efforts, CERTs enhance the resiliency of the community and assist first responders during disaster situations.

CERT Mission:

Spectrum Generations is seeking a Medicare volunteer to assist those within our community needing additional education surrounding Medicare. Our volunteers can help individuals one-on-one and by teaching a local Medicare 101 class within our Area Agency on Aging counties.

Our Medicare 101 sessions provide an overview of the qualifications, the different parts of Medicare, what is covered, and when to enroll. Spectrum Generations Medicare 101 classes empower participants in making decisions regarding their plans by receiving unbiased information on what plan is best for them.

Medicare volunteers must become SHIP certified by attending a three-day training course and by passing the SHIP exam. This training is of no cost to you and provided by Spectrum Generations. The training is virtual and can be taken at home. 

Spectrum Generations volunteers must be 18 years of age and older, complete a volunteer application, and pass a background check.

Healthy Living for ME® (HL4ME®) is Maine’s Community Care Hub (CCH), a collaborative effort involving local organizations, health systems, and volunteers. We aim to enhance health and wellness across Maine by coordinating community resources and empowering individuals to manage their health effectively, promoting a culture where prevention and wellness are prioritized. Our mission is to coordinate and align community resources to improve the health and wellness of the people of Maine. Our vision is to provide Maine people with the skills and resources to take control and build healthier lives.

Programs offered include education, fitness instruction, self-care strategies, health promotion activities, and social care coordination. HL4ME supports various needs such as chronic disease management, caregiver support, diabetes prevention, and intellectual/developmental disability support that address social determinants of health.

We are seeking volunteers to become class facilitators for our HL4ME workshops. Training is required and is provided at no cost to you. Workshops are held widely across our Area Agency on Aging counties dependent on the local area need. *Our Lewiston DC needs a volunteer for a route in Oxford on Thursday, 10 am – 12 pm. The pick-up is in Oxford, and the route takes about 1.5 hours.

* Want to volunteer but only occasionally? We seek backup delivery drivers for the MOW program in Androscoggin, Oxford, and Franklin Counties. Options include Mondays through Thursdays, 9 am-12 pm. Depending on the county, pickup would be at the prospective distribution center.

Meal site assistance is needed to serve, collect donations, and clean up weekly on the designated day for the respective sites. The time is typically between 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, except for the Industry site.

Flexible Volunteering:
Our Adult Day Programs are open weekdays, during business hours. Volunteers can create their own schedule to join us weekly or monthly for the full day or for two-hour shifts.  We ask for a minimum 6-month commitment.

Every Wednesday I volunteer at the Adult Day Program for older Mainers with varying degrees of dementia. It provides a home away from home environment chock full of wellness, hope… and friendship. What I got every Wednesday was the gift of witnessing life lived with courage and perseverance...I should be thanking SMAA for enhancing my life so greatly. The gifts of hearing how people have lived their lives and the endless magical moments I now experience on Wednesdays. Little did I know when I arrived here the gifts that would grow one right after the other. That my days inside the Adult Day Program would have me ballroom dancing to “MOON RIVER” at 11AM (!) or belting out a sing-a-long of Sweet Caroline...at the top of my lungs with the bravest people I’ve ever met?

...PLUS, PLUS…. the added inspiration the staff and volunteers would instill in me. The pure generosity the staff gives, strengthened by their teamwork to maintain each member’s dignity day after day, year after year...Every member feels seen.

You will be responsible to play the movie, pass out refreshments, sit and enjoy the film with our residents, put the movie away, and clean up following the resident's departure from the theater room. Comfort with occasional troubleshooting and the ability to follow a printed directions list for proper use of our electronic system required. Currently scheduled Mondays and Fridays from 1:00-4:00p.m. Can volunteer for just one day a week or both. (Training provided and staff support for first couple programs.)    

*Once fully independent with technology and troubleshooting, capacity to adjust schedule to support evening movies to be scheduled at volunteer availability.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore is always looking for extra hands! We are open Tuesday- Saturday from 9am-5pm. Volunteers help with cleaning, organizing, sorting donations and moving furniture.  Proceeds from the ReStore help support families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable home ownership. 

Become an Energy Coach! Coaches provide residents with individualized information and assistance to navigate home energy retrofits. An energy coach provides information on typical processes, financial incentives and available contractors, and stays with the resident with follow-up throughout the process.

The coaches are process facilitators, not technical experts, but will receive training to work in this capacity. We are looking for coaches who can provide excellent customer service and clear communication. Some familiarity with green energy technology is a plus. Our coaches are supported with a toolkit, access to experts to answer questions, and a peer learning approach for coaches to share knowledge. 2-5 hours per week.

Help us develop and produce monthly opportunities for residents to learn more about energy savings and take climate action on an individual, local and regional level. This committee meets 1-2 times per month on Zoom. We partner with area organizations to widen the impact of this outreach. 2-5 hours per month. MUST BE LOCATED IN YORK COUNTY, MAINE.
