YFO is seeking a dedicated volunteer to serve as our Board Treasurer. This individual will play a key leadership role in stewarding the organization’s financial health and ensuring transparency in all financial reporting. The Treasurer works closely with the Executive Director, bookkeeper, and Finance Committee to oversee financial management and provide clear, accurate information to the full board. Volunteer: Warming Center Volunteers Needed

Tedford Housing’s overnight Warming Center serves as a safe space for our unhoused and unsheltered neighbors (including families and pets) in the Mid Coast region to stay warm during the winter months. This is a low-barrier program, which means the requirements to enter the center are minimal, we emphasize harm reduction principles, and uphold a high standard of safety. Using low-barrier and harm reduction principles allows us to provide a space for our most vulnerable neighbors by recognizing that many of our guests have complex needs and behaviors related to mental illness, substance use, trauma, and systemic injustice.  


As a Warming Center host, volunteers will support staff by attending to and serving the evening meal and addressing the needs of the kitchen. They will help set a tone of hospitality and create a welcoming, nourishing space as guests arrive. Volunteers will be based in the kitchen, while staff are in the common spaces assisting guests in getting settled for the evening. The role will require an orientation, provided by Tedford staff. 

Host Responsibilities Include: 

Representing Tedford Housing with professionalism, dignity, and pride 

Setting up and serving dinner and coffee 

Keeping kitchen clean and organized, including dishwashing, readying for the next day 

Other kitchen related responsibilities


Commitment: 

Seasonal (Nov 15-May 1) 

At least one 3-hour (approx. 3:45-6:45pm) once-a-week shift for the entirety of the season, preferably the same day 

Arrive on time 


Qualities: 

18 years or older

Empathetic, non-judgmental, patient 

Solid understanding of the boundaries, confidentiality, and care needed in a low barrier setting 

Ability to de-escalate small conflicts and respond to guests with courtesy and empathy

Volunteer: Connect People to Financial Resources as a CA$H Opportunity Guide (Virtual or In-person)

Maybe you're looking for a safe way to help our neighbors save money and increase their financial stability? Join us to become an Opportunity Guide for CA$H (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope) Greater Portland, an initiative of United Way of Southern Maine in partnership with the Greater Portland CA$H Coalition.

During the tax season (late January through mid-April), Opportunity Guide volunteers review client documents and connect (by phone or in-person at Scan & Go sites) to discuss financial goals and challenges and possible resources that could help. This is a great opportunity for people with basic computer skills who are comfortable having one-on-one conversations.

CA$H Greater Portland (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope), an initiative of United Way of Southern Maine is a partnership with the Greater Portland CA$H Coalition comprised of community leaders and industry experts who work together to help individuals and families to achieve long-term financial stability. Hospice of Southern Maine cares for more than 1,600 patients annually, at the patient's home, current care facility, and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, an 18-bed inpatient facility in Scarborough. HSM admits patients with a variety of diagnoses, including Alzheimer's; heart, lung, and kidney diseases; stroke; Lou Gehrig's disease; and cancer. Care is patient-centered with family support and provided by a comprehensive interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers, aides, chaplains, grief counselors, and volunteers.

As a Kitchen Volunteer, you'll assist the Kitchen Manager in preparing food for hospice patients and their families. This role will be a skilled hand in a kitchen setting that will help with a variety of tasks - great for someone who wants to utilize their background in the food service industry or someone looking to build lifelong skills while helping those in need.

Key Volunteer Responsibilities:

FVP offers a free training (the Core Advocacy, Intervention, Response and Ethics Training) to help prepare you for this role; also, a staff person will be available to assist you by phone while you are volunteering. Throughout the training, participants will learn about the complex issue of domestic violence, the services of Family Violence Project, and how to talk with callers and help them create safety plans. Although successful completion of the training is required for this volunteer role, no other experience is necessary.

Once the training is successfully completed, and after a brief orientation period, volunteers will take helpline calls from home with support available by phone. Most volunteers contribute 9 to 15 hours per month by covering one weekend day (9 hour) or weeknight (15 hour) helpline shift.

The next 45-hour volunteer training will be held in Fall 2025. While the training dates have not yet been scheduled, we anticipate a mid or late October start date and plan to offer the training as a live-participation, online training. Volunteer: Fall 2025: Domestic Violence Helpline Advocate - Volunteer from Home!

Family Violence Project (FVP) has an ongoing need for volunteer advocates to help answer our 24-hour helpline for those affected by domestic violence. As a volunteer advocate on the helpline, you will make a difference in people’s lives by volunteering from the comfort of your home. Do you worry that you won't know what to say? FVP offers a free training (the Core Advocacy, Intervention, Response and Ethics Training) to help prepare you for this role; also, a staff person will be available to assist you by phone while you are volunteering. Throughout the training, participants will learn about the complex issue of domestic violence, the services of Family Violence Project, and how to talk with callers and help them create safety plans. Although successful completion of the training is required for this volunteer role, no other experience is necessary. Once the training is successfully completed, and after a brief orientation period, volunteers will take helpline calls from home with support available by phone. Most volunteers contribute 9 to 15 hours per month by covering one weekend day (9 hour) or weeknight (15 hour) helpline shift.

The next 45-hour volunteer training will be held in Fall 2025.  While the training dates have not yet been scheduled, we anticipate a mid or late October start date and plan to offer the training as a live-participation, online training.  If you are interested in participating in this opportunity, you must be 18 years of age or older, complete a volunteer interview prior to being accepted to the training, and pass background checks (including fingerprinting) prior to volunteering. While the training itself is free of charge, we ask for a $25 donation (to help cover the cost of background checks) from those who are financially able to provide it; the inability to donate will not prevent a person from participating!

Volunteer: Volunteer Reader Program: Schools Across Southern Maine

I am reaching out in search of volunteers for two different volunteer reader opportunities. They require regular time commitment throughout the upcoming school year, but you don’t need any experience to participate and they are a great way to make a lasting impact in a child’s life. A volunteer who participated last year shared:

 

"I loved volunteering at East End School and chose to help three first grade students every week after starting with one student. The eagerness, energy, humor, honesty, and enthusiasm that these students brought to our sessions was contagious and joyful. The students told me that our time together was their favorite day of the week, so that felt good as a volunteer! One boy who struggled to read at first jumped multiple levels during our time together, became dramatically more fluid at reading out loud, and told me at the end of the year that he just loves reading."

 

The first opportunity is with elementary school students:

Volunteers will visit a school each week to read with students for one hour to promote literacy. These sessions might be one-on-one, with small groups, or a whole class, depending on the needs of the school. There are multiple school sites to choose from and you can share your location preference. Volunteers must attend a one-hour training in September and will start working with students in October and continue through June. Training date is TBD. Speakers of non-English languages are welcome! Biddeford Ready! hosts a weekly Story Hour at their Biddeford Hub for children ages 0-5 and their families. It will be every Friday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. We are looking for multiple volunteers to create a rotating schedule (such as, being the reader the first week of each month). As these emergencies continue, the mission of the American Red Cross continues and we need more volunteers to reinforce those getting exhausted. Most disaster deployments call for a 14 day commitment and ability to work multiple shifts on consecutive days. Due to the ever changing nature of large scale disasters, deployment cannot be guaranteed.

Work in person at a Red Cross shelter before, during and/or after a disaster supporting day-to-day activities in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information collection, etc. Provide excellent compassionate customer service be prepared to observe all safety protocols in a COVID environment.  This position requires the ability to build effective relationships with co-workers and shelter residents, strong written and verbal communication skills, physical ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods, including climbing stairs and can lift/transport supplies up to 20 pounds multiple times per shift, along with availability to complete self-paced online training.

DISASTER CASE WORKERS

Work in person to connect Disaster clients with resources, comfort and support people who are forced from their homes due to disaster.  Provide excellent compassionate customer service be prepared to observe all safety protocols in a COVID environment.  This position requires the ability to build effective relationships with co-workers and clients, strong written and verbal communication skills, some computer skills along with availability to complete self-paced online training.

DISASTER HEALTH SERVICES ASSOCIATES

Role Description


When you have been diagnosed with cancer, uncertainty consumes you. Support takes on many different forms for different people. The Christine B. Foundation (CBF) is here to help navigate through this uncertainty for 1,000 Mainers a year, extending access to healthy food, nutritional information and the comfort and strength essential to their strength and comfort. We’re hoping you can join us. 


CBF is looking for empathetic and compassionate individuals that enjoy interacting with and assisting patients facing cancer and would be dedicated to improving the patient experience through our Cancer Nutrition Assistance Program (CNAP). This service provides patients and their families with both a no cost fresh Produce Prescription program and home delivered medically tailored grocery packages.The CNAP Site Representative(s) primary role is to be the face of CBF at our pick up location in the Lafayette Family Cancer Center in Brewer. Every week our Site Representatives greets patients with a cheerful smile and assists them through the process of selecting from an array of fresh fruits and vegetables that best suits their medical and personal needs. 

Working directly with Program Staff, you will be trained on critical aspects of the many aspects of CNAP programming, HIPAA and program policy, EHR computer software, and the tools to really make a difference to each patient you meet.  You will also be trained as a volunteer under Northern Light Health to ensure that we are aware of and respect their policies and procedures.  In this position you will make an immediate and positive difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. This position is in a medical setting where you will regularly interact directly with patients, actively use a computer with EHR software, and provide patients with nutritional support.

The Cancer Nutrition Assistance Program through CBF offers access to both a Fresh Produce Prescription program at our pick up locations in Brewer and Dover-Foxcroft and Home Delivery of medically tailored grocery packages for patients with cancer, recent survivors, and their families. This program supports over 1,000 Mainers every year across the state, providing over 600,000 equivalent meals since March of 2020.

On Monday, from 7am-9:30am, the volunteer group would meet at the CBF Fulfillment Site on Hancock Street, pick up the CBF Cargo Van, and gather orders from two to three vendor locations in Hampden  and Bangor. CBF's Fulfillment Site is located in Bangor. However, for rural deliveries, CBF may be able to meet volunteer Home Delivery drivers closer to the home destination. 

Households are eligible for grocery package deliveries once a week. CBF seeks volunteers who can designate a day of the week/time of day to be the primary driver for that home.

Volunteers can submit gas reimbursement at $0.25 per mile.

Days of the week and time of day can vary based on availability. Pick Up/Delivery times are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in the morning or afternoons.

Join us as a volunteer with the Money Minders Program at the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to assist older adults in York & Cumberland counties in managing their finances to help them live independently. Volunteers work closely with clients to provide support in a way that respects their dignity and privacy.

While we are accepting rolling applications for any volunteers that wish to be involved in this program, we are currently prioritizing volunteers that live within (or are willing to commute to) Old Orchard Beach & Bridgton to be matched with clients that are on our wait list!



What you’ll do:
As a volunteer, you will partner with a client to assist with various monthly financial tasks, including:
-Reading and sorting mail
-Preparing a basic monthly budget
-Preparing—but NOT signing—checks to pay monthly bills
-Recording transactions in the check register
-Reconciling the check register with bank statements
-Communicating with vendors about billing issues
-Offering reliable companionship and a listening ear
Please note: Volunteers do not control client funds, ensuring a safe and protected environment for both you and the client.

Qualities, experience, & skills you'll need:
-A compassionate and respectful attitude towards client privacy and dignity
-Ability to assist clients with financial tasks, though prior experience with budgeting is helpful but not required
-Strong communication skills, particularly in interacting with vendors
-A commitment to maintaining client confidentiality and following program safeguards

Where & when you’ll volunteer:
Volunteers will with meet clients at their homes, providing assistance in a comfortable and familiar setting.
Meetings are typically once or twice a month, at a time that works for both you and your client. Volunteers generally spend 1-2 hours per visit, and we ask for an initial commitment of 1 year to ensure continuity for clients.

Looking for a new volunteer opportunity to spark joy in your life? Seashore Trolley Museum seeks new recruits from the community who want to learn a unique, new skill and help the Museum provide an awesome experience for guests this season by becoming volunteer trolley Conductors and Operators!

Seashore Trolley Museum's trolleys are the real deal; they operate on an electric railway and are the real trolleys from the late 1800s-early 1900s (and some cities like Boston, El Paso, New Orleans, etc. still operate trolleys and/or light rail vehicles today!).  These are different than the tourist trolleys (which are really buses designed to look like our real trolleys for nostalgia) that are out in the summers and are operated by for-profits with paid bus drivers. 

Volunteers will learn how to be a Conductor first. During the training classes, new volunteers will be trained by a pair of Seashore Instructors. Topics will include the ins and outs of the information shared with guests about the museum’s history and the robust transit collection, how to safely board guests on the trolleys, how the railroad works and is operated (rules), and the duties of being a Conductor. Additional experience will be gained by working with experienced Conductors. When ready, the students will be qualified as Seashore Conductors who will be able to work in revenue service, paired with a qualified Operator who will operate the car. The next step will be to complete further instruction with a Seashore Instructor on operating the car.

The Museum is holding their next  training courses in August. To be eligible, volunteers must become members of the Museum, be 18 years old by the conclusion of the course, and must hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license from any U.S. state.

The Museum is holding their next  training courses in August. To be eligible, volunteers must become members of the Museum, be 18 years old by the conclusion of the course, and must hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license from any U.S. state.

Keeping this building in good condition so that all may enjoy is rewarding work - and it takes a village! Volunteers can help with a wide range of projects, depending on their skills and availability. We regularly need help with: taming the willow dome, gallery wall prep and painting, cleaning and organizing, maintaining the grounds (a terrific opportunity for groups wanting to volunteer together) and garden beds, sign painting, kiln repair, light construction/carpentry, and more.
