Volunteer: Take "The Next Step" to make a difference in the life of a victim of domestic abuse in Washington or Hancock County.

""When I was sitting in court, scared and alone, you came to sit with me and let me know that I was not really alone at all. I can never thank you enough." These are actual words from a person who had a court advocate with them on the day of a hearing for a protection order. A court advocate provides a basic understanding of the way the court procedures work, but more importantly, the advocate is there to hold a hand or help someone be as calm as possible. "I called just to talk because I was so confused and afraid. You listened and cared." This synopsis of feelings is very real. Our hotline volunteers answer calls directed through an answering service from their homes. Although there are occasional serious emergency calls, most of the calls that we handle are from people who just need to feel reassured that they have a right to be free from abuse. Neither position calls for prior experience with domestic abuse, but each does require compassion, sensitivity and clear communication skills. These two positions are ways that anyone can make a real difference, one person at a time, in standing up against domestic violence in our community. A small commitment of time from you, as little as a few hours once a month, can help people to feel less alone and may even save lives.

Volunteer: ""Wood" you like to work with your hands?

Can you get creative with a lathe? Do you long to break out of the cookie-cutter birdhouse and stepping stool molds of woodworking? Then we want you! This summer we're hosting a variety of this ever-so-hip-these-days photo booths during Art Walks. We've created some paper mustaches, funny hats and speech bubbles for folks to use as props but would love to have some more durable wooden versions created. We'll need a variety of mustaches, beards, glasses, hats, lips and more in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. They'll need to be attached solidly to wooden dowels so folks can hold them up during their pictures! In addition to all that other stuff there are some really creative pieces we'd love to have as well. (A Batman Mask! Shakespeare's Hair! chalkboard painted thought bubbles!) We've got the templates you need to get started but welcome your own creative ideas as well! If you have the desire to make any or all of these we want you! Supply your own wood, dowels and paint or let us help pay for it (Just tell us what to get!)

Volunteer: Volunteer tutors needed at Lewiston Public Library!

Help kids achieve academic success by offering homework help and general support! The program runs Monday-Thursday and offers drop-in homework help for students in grades 6 -12, with most students in grades 7-10. It runs from 3:30-5:30 and an average of 30 students come every day. It is primarily attended by ELL students from the refugee communities. These are very hard-working students and we are grateful for any time you can commit to helping them. You don?t need to be a math whiz or a spelling bee champ to help out ? and you don't need previous tutoring/teaching experience to apply. A lot of the students just need help understanding what they are reading, writing answers with correct grammar, using the computer to do projects, and learning basic math. Volunteers are provided with initial pre-service training before their first day and then ongoing support throughout the year.

Volunteer: Educational Surrogate Parent

The Maine Department of Education is looking for people around the state to volunteer to become Educational Surrogate Parents.

An educational surrogate parent is responsible for making sure that students (typically special education students in residential placements), who have no available parents, are getting all of the special education  services that they need from the school.  (This is not tutoring)

It doesn't take a lot of time and the reward in knowing that you helped a special education student with their education is so worth it.

There is more information on our website:  http://www.maine.gov/doe/specialed/programs/surrogate/index.html

Volunteer: Telephone Recovery Support Volunteers

Our telephone recovery support (TRS) is designed to help people stay in recovery from addictive substances.  This program is a free service and trained volunteers make weekly calls for 12 weeks to individuals at any stage of their recovery. The calls are an opportunity to "check in" and see how they are doing, identify any issues and connect them to community resources as needed.

Volunteer: Money Minders Volunteers

We need volunteers statewide to participate in our Money Minders Program, a program which is aimed at helping older adults maintain their independence and peace of mind.  The Money Minders Program matches trained, supervised, bonded volunteers with adults 55 and older who need help establishing a monthly budget and ensuring that all bills get paid in a timely and accurate manner.

One corps of trained volunteers helps clients sort bills, establish a budget and prepare (but not sign) checks to pay their monthly expenses. Bill paying volunteers meet with clients in their homes, or another mutually agreed upon place, to assist them with their bills. These volunteers do not exercise control over any client's funds, and all transactions are made from a designated account with a running balance of less than $3,500.

Other volunteers have been trained as auditors to periodically review the financial activity in each client's designated account to monitor for inconsistencies that might indicate a problem within the program.

Volunteers in the Money Minders Program must provide 3 references that are checked, they are interviewed in depth and receive criminal background checks. All volunteers receive in-service training and understand and respect the program policy of not taking control of a client’s finances.
