Many of our wonderful folks have  life goals around creating Art.  We have had two very successful shows in the community but the pandemic meant  we lost our  ability to provide instruction. Art has been an integral part of MOBIUS, Inc. and with your help we can return it to a vital place again.

Would you like to offer an hour or two to paint alongside and offer advice to our artists? Staff will transport and provide personal supports during this time, even hand over hand if needed.

This could be a one time thing which requires no  background checks,  just your talent and enthusiasm OR you could offer a series and Mobius would provide you with some simple training  and a background check to meet state requirements,

Volunteering Opportunities - EMMC - Northern Light Health

PURPOSE OF JOB: Provide essential customer service to visitors by welcoming them to the museum and processing their purchases.

RESPONSIBILITES:

The Rufus Porter Museum of Art and Ingenuity is open from mid-June to mid-October, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Shifts are in 3.25 hour increments (9:45 am to 1 pm, 1 pm to 4:15 pm) with two people scheduled for each shift (one as a Museum Docent/Tour Guide, the other as a Museum Store Volunteer). Last tour is at 3:30 pm.

Would you like to support early childhood literacy in your community? If you have one hour per week available to read to children, please contact the BookReach Volunteer Reading Program. We provide weekly storytimes for children in small in-home daycares throughout Lewiston, Auburn, and Minot. Help foster children's enthusiasm for books so they will be ready to learn when they reach school! BookReach is an early literacy program of the Lewiston and Auburn Public Libraries. All books and materials are provided. Our "Let's go for a WALK"  program is designed to help get our rescue dogs out of the kennels for an hour, a few hours, or even a day trip. "Field Trips" or "Doggy Day Outs" as they are generally referred to throughout the animal welfare community are quickly becoming known as a great way for people who might not be able to have a pet to enjoy the benefits of pet ownership while doing something great for one of our rescues who are stuck in a kennel day in, day out.  Everyone benefits with our program, the dogs, the volunteers and of course the rescue, it's a win for everyone!

The priority is for the dogs that have been at the rescue for one month and longer, dogs that have recently arrived will not be eligible for the program.

Our program is open to members of the community who are 18 years or older, responsible and "preferably" have some experience with dogs. An application must be completed and an appointment scheduled to come and meet some of the dogs suitable for the program. Volunteers will need to spend time at the rescue in the play area with the dog they will be taking out with them, to build a relationship and allow the dog and person to feel comfortable, safe and happy with each other. We will only allow our dogs out when we are confident a good match is made.

We do not allow visits to dog parks, or homes and environments where there will be interaction with other pets. The focus is for the dog going on the walk, so that they can experience a great time, without more distractions and for information to be gathered on behavior, likes, dislikes, fun things and of course as many pictures as possible to help us to promote their adoption.

Only one dog per person is allowed, however, if two or more people have dog experience and the dogs get on with each other at the rescue, we would consider two dogs going out on the same trip! 

it is important to remember that we are always looking to find these precious saved souls their forever homes and the more exposure, the more information, pictures and video's we can provide, the higher chance they will have of finding their forever homes.

Do you love Halloween? We'd love to have you help us! We plan a HUGE event each year. We need volunteers to help with things like:

* building sets and set up

* working at the event, scaring people, selling tickets, helping with parking...

* cleaning up after the event

We also offer workshops throughout the year, actor workshops, make up, photo shoots and MORE!

Tutors would meet online (Zoom, Google Meet or another online platform) with the same ESOL student once a week for an hour to review and reinforce work that they do in their classes at Portland Adult Education. Tutors and students may also meet in-person at Portland Adult Education on 14 Locust Street at a mutually convenient time during the morning, afternoon, or evening. 

As a helpline volunteer, you’ll provide our core service—answering calls that come in to our 24-hour crisis helpline. No matter when someone calls, a helpline worker is there, ready to listen and to offer support and information about domestic abuse, safety planning, and our other services. Although it’s not easy, answering the helpline is one of the most rewarding jobs at Partners for Peace. You are the first contact someone affected by abuse has with our organization and often the first voice someone hears as they reach out for help. To provide helpline volunteers with the support, information, and practice they need, we require you to complete a mandatory training. This is a time commitment of about 45+ hours over eight weeks.

Partners for Peace is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of passionate community members who volunteer their time to provide organizational and financial oversight and serve as ambassadors for the organization. We are always looking for dedicated folks to serve on our Governing Board. This committee acts as our organizational board of directors, responsible for overall policy and direction of the organization. We also have several standing committees at our organization including a Finance Committee and Development & Engagement Committee. Volunteers can be invited to join these committees at Board or community members.

We are currently looking for volunteers who would like to help out with our office work, cleaning office and shelter spaces, and organizing donations. We often have a need for volunteers with trucks and the ability to transport furniture and large items help survivors of domestic violence move in and out of shelter and into permanent housing. We also sometimes need help transporting furniture donations to storage or to the homes of survivors. The amount of time required for this job is negotiable, so please contact us if you are interested.

At various times throughout the year (especially in October for Domestic Violence Action Month), we need people willing to help with special events or projects, distributing outreach materials and representing Partners for Peace in the community. This type of volunteering requires a 1.5 hour Ambassadors Training provided by Partners for Peace.

The HIAS Refugee Resettlement Program at the Jewish Community Alliance is looking for volunteers to help move furniture and household items into the homes of newly arrived families. 

Specific tasks include: Transporting, lifting and moving furniture from specified locations and delivering to designated apartments/houses with supervision. Must be able to life 40-50 lbs., and to carry furniture on staircases. A large vehicle to help transport items is appreciated but not required. 

This is a unique opportunity to engage directly with refugee clients and help welcome them into the local community by preparing their new home. 

Your presence is needed!!  Free hospice volunteer classes to be scheduled.  Learn how you can improve the quality of life for patients, lessen their isolation and comfort them and their caregivers. Beacon Hospice needs volunteers to provide companionship to terminally ill patients and their families. We need people from Woolwich to Ogunquit and out to the NH border. Spectrum Generations Waldo Community Center and MidCoast Regional Center for Volunteers for our Money Minders program. Days and Times are flexible. Through Money Minders, volunteers are matched with older adults who need help managing their finances.

Our Muskie Community Center is in need of volunteers for the Money Minders program as well.

Our Soup Kitchen needs help with bagging up food to hand out, washing dishes, and general cleaning from 9:00-11:00 and 12:30-2:30 most days. Join our Kennebunk ReStore volunteer team. We are lucky to have a very dedicate group of volunteers who typically volunteer on a weekly basis. Volunteering with us is a great way to get involved in the community. We have also had many students and adults complete their community service hours with us.

The ReStore isn't only about heavy lifting! If you have lifting restrictions we still have plenty of opportunities. Volunteer roles can include, receiving donations, assisting the cashier, testing appliances, cleaning items, customer interaction, hardware organization, special projects, getting the sales floor ready for the day.

Interpreters are an essential part of Norlands’ educational programs. By touring Norlands, visitors gain a better understanding the Washburn family, their achievements, and life in rural Maine in the 1800s. The United Way Resource Development Committee is responsible for creating and implementing comprehensive development strategies that engage donors, businesses and foundations in fundraising. The committee is comprised of people with experience in resource and business development.

This committee meets on the last Tuesday of every month at 12 p.m.

Our Food Rescue Project partners with Hannaford Lewiston and Bates College and accepts leftover food that would otherwise be thrown away. Volunteers help out once a week, picking up donations and delivering them to the Center. Volunteers have the same day and pick-up every week, for example one volunteer is responsible for the Tuesday Bates pick-up every week. A pick-up usually takes about an hour and must be done in the morning. Email volunteertjc@gmail.com if you are interested!

Direct Care Hospice Volunteers provide compassionate non-medical support to individuals who are living at end-of-life. This support may be in the form of companionship, doing light household chores, picking up and delivering groceries, running errands, meal preparation, shoveling snow, bedside vigil or other complementary care. Volunteers are asked to give from 1-3 hours per week of their time. Direct Care Hospice Volunteers must complete an application, a 24-hour training and a background check before starting to volunteer.

Bereavement Volunteers help to facilitate support groups for adults and children/youth who have lost a loved one. Adult support groups may address grief in general or may specialize in assisting parents who have lost a child or infant, adult children who have lost a parent, partner loss, holiday grief support, or loss due to suicide. In our special program, Hope's Place, volunteers can assist children and youth who have lost a significant person in their lives. Volunteers may facilitate weekly expressive art groups, run workshops, or assist with Camp Ray of Hope, a weekend retreat for children and their families. Bereavement volunteers typically give 1-3 hours per week of their time. They must also complete an application, 20 hour training, and background check before beginning to volunteer.

General Volunteers typically do not provide direct care to clients or the bereaved, but contribute to HVWA's mission in other important ways. This may be through volunteering at our resale shop, answering phones, organizing donations, and assisting with fundraisers or special events. General Volunteers typically give between 2-4 hours per week and require an 4 hour training.

We are a donation collection center in constant need of basic material needs.

We ask companies to donate hygiene and first aid items, clothing, and kitchenware.

We will provide training and a script to assist you in making requests.

As a museum greeter, you would be the first face visitors encounter and have a variety of tasks, ranging from selling historic house tour tickets for the Skolfield-Whittier House and Joshua L. Chamberlain House, providing information about the museum and local area, taking simple research questions, answering phones, and admin tasks. We're open Tuesday-Saturday and have morning and afternoon shifts available. Most of our volunteers work one shift per week (2-3 hours). Training and support are provided by a dedicated and friendly staff. We have many elderly people in the area that are still independent and living alone.  They are isolated because they cannot drive anymore or maybe they have family members who are unable to help. Many of their friends have passed away or cannot come to see them as often. They are lonely. We match a volunteer with one elderly person. The two of you can then make plans to just visit, take a walk, go shopping or to a medical appointment, or maybe just share a simple meal. The opportunity to do something they haven't been able to do in a long time is exciting to the senior and very rewarding to our volunteers! The SEARCH Program has seniors waiting for a volunteer in many towns in the Bath area, including all of Sagadahoc County. Bernard, Leonnelle and their child (girl - 1) live in Portland and are from Burkina Faso. Leonnelle is a nurse and Bernard is a project manager and they like walking, music and movies, shopping, cooking, learning English, and reading. They need legal help as well as assistance with finding an apartment and transportation. They speak French, Lingala, Moore, Portuguese and some English. 

What does mentoring look like? That’s up to you and the family. In less complicated times, we like our mentors to take a more hands-on approach to help mentees integrate into the community- such as including them in family outings & introducing them to the area. Currently, mentoring can be done while social distancing and some support can be provided remotely. Checking in regularly, sending along translated info regarding COVID-19, helping mentees locate resources- these are all things that can be done while maintaining safe distance if this is preferred by mentor and mentees. We still ask that anyone applying to mentor through WTS live local to the Portland area, so that you can begin an in-person relationship with your mentees once you feel safe doing so.  

Hancock County Habitat for Humanity provides safe affordable housing to families in need throughout Hancock County, building strong communities and adding stability where needed.

We are seeking a individual willing to offer 3-5 hours per week updating and maintain our social media platforms; posting updates, building followership, and spreading the word of our mission. The ideal person has a strong knowledge of social media platforms and love to share the wonderful story that come from our work. A strong belief in Habitat for Humanities mission is essential to creating the positive, uplifting social medial image for the organization.

LCHA has openings for docents at all three of our museums: the Pownalborough Court House in Dresden, the Old Jail in Wiscasset, and the Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta.

Museum Docents are crucial to our operations. They greet guests, sell museum tickets, and give museum tours. This opportunity is a great fit for people will a variety of skills and interests. A curiously about local history, building architecture, or community heritage and/or an interest in meeting new people will be helpful to the museum docent.

Our 44-hour crisis intervention training prepares our volunteers to take calls from people who are affected by domestic violence. These are people in our communities who might be directly affected as a victim, concerned about a family member, or a professional needing information on how to help the person they are working with. Volunteers usually take calls from the comfort of their own home and always have a staff member available to back them up.

Friendly visitors add so much to the lives of the residents and members at the Cedars. The goal of being a friendly visitor is to provide companionship to our residents and members. This may be done through reading, playing games, sharing stories, writing a letter or just conversing. The resident usually indicates how they would like this time to be spent. Our friendly visitors often assist residents by escorting or transporting to and from activities provided within our community. Traits of a friendly visitor here at The Cedars include: The ability to relate effectively, positively and compassionately with residents, members and staff. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Interest in getting to know residents personally. Ability to work with minimal supervision once tasks and responsibilities have been clearly defined. We are an all-volunteer, non-profit, public benefit corporation serving the communities of Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Cumberland, Falmouth, Cape Elizabeth, Gorham, Scarborough and Windham. TIP volunteers are specially trained citizens who are available 24/7/365 to be called upon by emergency responders (police officers, firefighters, paramedics and hospital personnel) to assist family members, witnesses, and other bystanders in the first few hours following a traumatic event wherein victims and survivors often feel hopeless, confused, and in emotional shock.

Victims and survivors are often confronted with circumstances and situations for which they are totally unprepared and they often feel devastated, alone, and overwhelmed. The emergency responders on scene must focus on their job duties and responsibilities during a crisis and are not able to provide the immediate support victims and survivors need. TIP volunteers are able to provide that much needed immediate emotional and practical support to those they are called to be with.

Furniture Friends is in need of one-time or reoccurring volunteer groups to help deliver furniture to our clients in need.

Our volunteer groups commit to a three hour time-frame to serve families in Greater Portland. It is a volunteer opportunity that is active and builds teamwork, ideal for various service groups and corporate volunteer days. We work with both youth and adult volunteers.

The Adopt-a-Trail program at Mount A is an all-volunteer effort that provides individuals an opportunity to help conserve and maintain our trails. By “adopting” a trail in the Mount A Conservation Region, volunteers take responsibility for helping with trail upkeep. Trail adopters become helpful assistants by monitoring their chosen trail and providing some basic maintenance throughout the year.

Who can adopt a trail? Any interested family, organization, individual or neighborhood group can care for a trail. The primary adopter must be at least 18 years old, however, involving youngsters is highly encouraged!

What are the duties of an Adopt-a-Trail volunteer? The expectation is for adopters to provide basic assistance to the Conservation Crew in maintaining their selected trail. Activities include keeping the trail surface and corridor clear, cleaning drainage ditches, and clearing debris from bridges, stairs, and viewing decks. Other responsibilities include litter clean-up, maintaining the trailhead area, and reporting trail hazards for safety issues.

Of major importance, adopters serve as an extra set of eyes for the Conservation Crew. A once-a-season visit (every three months, winter optional) to your trail provides vital assistance in keeping up with trail maintenance. Additional visits after storms or whenever convenient are certainly appreciated.

Training: Mount A staff will provide orientation and train volunteers in safe techniques for accomplishing Adopt-a-Trail duties, and work with groups to get them started. Staff will work with volunteers until both parties are comfortable, and will continue to coordinate activities after the adopters are working on their own.

Is your family, group or organization looking for a volunteer opportunity? Mount A is seeking seasonal volunteers to help us care for our native plant beds! Native plants are adapted to local environmental conditions, provide vital habitat, help maintain species diversity, and are kept in check by natural succession.

Volunteers will "adopt" a summit plant bed and take responsibility for its upkeep (weeding, mulching, etc.). Once trained, adopters can work at their own pace and on their own schedule throughout the season. A time commitment of one growing season is required (approx. May-Sept).

RTP is looking to expand it's Board of Directors with compassionate individuals interested in guiding the mission of this important nonprofit agency. The term is three years and fundraising is not required for this position. Volunteers at 40 Walch Drive in Portland assist the Operations team with the collecting, sorting, evaluating, organizing, preparing, and packaging medical supplies by specific criteria for shipment on our containers. Examples of tasks: reviewing donated items when the arrive, sorting like-for-like items together, cutting or wiping off dates, repackaging items, counting and bagging items, labeling items, moving items to medical categories, packing boxes and building pallets of boxed items. There is no minimum hours commitment for this work but it would be great to have a schedule to ensure that there is consistency of volunteering. These are the most common volunteer opportunities at PWH and there is always a need for help.

Packers support the BackPack Program at FCS by packing bags full of snacks and meals for students to take home over the weekend.

The BackPack Program at FCS provides more than 50 children in K-12 in RSU5 who are living with the effects of chronic hunger with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food to eat during weekends throughout the school year. Proper nutrition over the weekend ensures students can come to school on Monday ready to learn. 

This position is where the FCS Values Statement begins: “We are dedicated to helping one another with respect and compassion, in an inclusive and welcoming environment.” Volunteers here will be a friendly and informa­tive first point of contact for visitors as they come through the Center’s main entrance. Greeters will direct patrons to the Food Pantry, Thrift Shop, bathrooms, etc.; and answer questions as they arise.

This shift can be performed standing and/or sitting.

Cashiers in the Thrift Shop are a welcoming first face as patrons enter the shop.  They also bag and ring patrons purchases up when ready to leave!

The Thrift Shop at Freeport Community Services is a primary source of revenue for FCS, most of which enables FCS to offer a myriad of programs and services to the community. Donations & recycling helps our planet by keeping useful items out of a landfill, helps strengthen our communities by funding programs and services for Freeport Community Services and provides a good opportunity for thrifty shoppers to find great bargains. 

The FCS Thrift Shop is among the best thrift stores in New England. It is welcoming, organized and conveniently located in downtown Freeport with free parking, and features a wide selection of in-season clothing and footwear, as well as housewares, furniture, vintage goods and collectibles. There’s always something new and unexpected at the Thrift Shop.

Cashiers receive a 10% volunteer discount and a first-look at items before they arrive on the Thrift Shop floor.

Sorting Room Assistants support the FCS Thrift Shop by working as part of a behind-the-scenes team in the Sorting Room to sort, fold, and hang donations before they go out to the Thrift Shop floor for sale.

This shift requires standing and the ability to lift up to 15 lbs.

Distribution Assistants support the FCS Food Pantry by helping shoppers find what they are looking for in the pantry and restocking products as necessary.

This shift requires standing and the ability to lift up to 30 lbs. 

Donations Collectors support the FCS Food Pantry by picking up donations at local grocery stores, delivering them to the pantry, and helping to unload. 

Volunteers can use a truck provided by FCS to perform this duty.

This opportunity requires ability to walk, stand, and dynamic movements like bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, stooping as needed.

Greeters support the FCS Food Pantry by being a welcoming first point of contact for shoppers when they arrive, checking them into our database, and helping to maintain a queue as shoppers wait to be admitted into the pantry.

The FCS Community Meal is an opportunity for anyone to enjoy a homemade meal. The lunches are free of charge to anyone, from anywhere, and serve approximately 60-75 people on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month. 

Volunteers working as part of the Cooking Team will communicate with the Volunteer Coordinator to determine a menu (based on surplus items in FCS' Food Pantry), which they will cook at FCS' kitchen on the Thursday before the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month. The Cooking Team is responsible for cooking & bagging meals, as well as cleaning the kitchen.

Partner with  a consumer to walk in the community. Walking buddies partner with people who need companionship to navigate the streets in their community.  Walking buddies  can choose the best time for them and their walking partner. Generally, buddies walk for an hour a week but this can increase over time as fitness also increases. This is in the Lincoln County Area.

Mobius, Inc, provides volunteer training and background checks at no cost to the volunteers.

We are looking for ongoing volunteers to spend time with young people in our drop-in afterschool programs located in public housing communities around Portland. Ages, interests, and abilities vary greatly between our programs so we are looking for volunteers who are interested in getting to know a lot of different youth and being a caring adult in their lives. 

We provide training for all volunteers and they are always paired with experienced staff members. Volunteers help us to distribute attention and activities to more youth in the space. A couple of hours in our program could consist of reading books with little ones, playing Uno with Middle School students, then helping a teen write an essay for school. Every day is unique and focused on the youth in the space and what their needs are that day.

We prefer volunteers who can commit to 2-3 hours per week on a given afternoon in one location so they can build relationships with and consistency for the youth in that neighborhood. If possible, we would like a two month minimum commitment, again for consistency for our youth. 

We require all volunteers to be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination prior to volunteering. We also require masking and social distancing regardless of vaccination status in our program spaces. 

Spectrum Generations Healthy Living 4 ME program is in a need of a volunteer trainer for the Living Well for Better Health class. This is an 8 week structured group intervention that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce the fear of falling and increasing activity levels with older adults.

Duties May Include:

This is an immediate need for this area. Time frames are flexible after initial training, which is completely free and provided. 

Assists with the management of equipment, supplies and materials utilized during a disaster event. May be assigned to the County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) or to a geographically separated storage/warehouse facility.

An Emergency Management Office Volunteer works part time at the County Emergency Management Agency performing various administrative tasks. 

Our primary need is for outgoing and motivated people who can assist with our Public Outreach and Education Program.

The Office Volunteers may work when it is convenient for them and however many hours they wish. We will provide workspace, access to a computer and free coffee!

The BARN frequently holds special events like dances, holiday parties, fundraisers, and community outreach activities which require extra hands for set up, break down, and help throughout the duration of the event. This is a great way to get involved with the BARN even if you cannot make a long-term or regular commitment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Be flexible and willing to fill in where needed. If you have any special skills, let the event coordinator know ahead of time. Most events will require help setting up, cleaning up, and maintaining the space during the event.

This is a monthly orientation held for people that are seeking a volunteer position at BARN. It is open to everybody. We have positions ranging from front desk volunteers, special event volunteers, and varying committee positions. Come to the orientation to learn more about how to get involved at BARN!

At the orientation we will:
- Discuss different volunteer positions
- Go over expectations
- Review the BARN’s Policy Manual
- Discuss different scenarios volunteers may run into
- Review training opportunities
- Fill out applications

After the orientation, we will discuss next steps for those who are interested in moving forward with a volunteer position!

Responsibilities will vary by committee and the projects it is working on. Some BARN committees include marketing, the Bangor Area Recovery Community Coalition, and the operations committee.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Regular attendance at committee meetings and tasks as assigned or agreed upon by committee members. A good fit would have effective communication skills and the abilities to collaborate and work independently.

Front desk volunteers keep the BARN running smoothly by keeping it clean, responding to patrons’ needs, and upholding the mission of the BARN. Front desk volunteers also provide peer support to anyone who enters the BARN in need, whether they are a long-time patron or visiting for the first time.

Junior Achievement (JA) is seeking friendly and motivated volunteers (from all occupations) to teach pre-planned courses on entrepreneurship, work readiness, and financial literacy to Maine students. Volunteers lead sessions over the course of one-day or multiple weeks and work directly with the educator to schedule the lessons. Classes are taught during school hours and all materials and training is provided. 

If you're looking for an easy and rewarding way to give back, this is the program for you! Our volunteers come from all walks of life, from senior leadership to young professionals, to retired educators - everyone has work & life experience to share! If you've experienced adult life, you are qualified and have a tremendous amount to offer Maine students. PWH has a very active list of annual fundraising events that need a lot of volunteer support to be successful. Members of the Events Committee will provide support as needed for the individual events. See our website for this year’s events. This committee is looking for self-starters who want to help create, plan, and implement successful fundraising events. Members will meet biweekly in-person or via Zoom to create fun exciting events that will promote and propel the mission of PWH. Desired skills include: marketing, planning, sales, and an abundance of flexibility and creativity.

Volunteers at the 312 Canco Road warehouse in Portland assist the Warehouse Manager and other volunteers with more traditional warehouse tasks. Examples of tasks: placing packed boxes on labeled shelves, unloading/loading the box truck, assisting with inventory projects, pairing crutches, bundling canes, pulling and labeling boxes in preparation for container shipments, repairing equipment, and cleaning items.. There is no minimum hours commitment for this work.
