The Children’s Center has scheduled the 17th Annual Chili Chowder Challenge for Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Augusta Armory. The event is now the biggest, longest lasting, and most often imitated chili and chowder competition in Maine. The fundraiser began when a group of agency supporters organized a fun event for kids and families to raise money for the programs at the Center.
The fun-filled, family-oriented event draws an enthusiastic crowd anxious to vote on their favorite chilis and chowders from twelve to fifteen local restaurants and caterers. In addition to the culinary competition, which allows local chefs to compete for recognition in several categories, the event includes children’s crafts, a silent auction, and live music. Spots for competing restaurants are highly valued and awards hold great importance for them.
The committee starts meets for one hour once per month from September to December, once every two weeks January to February, and once per week in March. The committee is comprised of community members and staff of the Children's Center. The group focuses on solidifying sponors for the event, confirming restaurants, acquiring donated food and silent auction items, organizing volunteers, planning activities for the event, and overall preparation for the big day. The committee usually helps set up at 8:00 a.m. and take down at 2:00 p.m. the day of the event. The committee is very flexible. Any and all help is much appreciated!
